One man is dead, following a shooting early this morning in Northwest Roanoke.
It happened along the 400 block of Gilmer Avenue around 3-30 a-m.
When police arrived they found
20-year old David Wallace lying in the street with a gunshot wound to his chest.
Wallace died at the scene.
Witnesses told investigators Wallace got out of his car, was confronted by someone, and shot.
The suspect got away before police arrived.

Anyone with information about the shooting can call the Roanoke detective bureau at 853-2571.
As the independent counsel's report sinks in this weekend, Congress appears more likely to vote for a formal impeachment inquiry.

That's according to a Roanoke attorney who served as a lawyer for the House Judiciary Committee's impeachment hearing during Watergate.

Paula Johnson is raising Callie Marie--the biological child of Kevin Chittum and Whitney Rogers.

The N-T-S-B says pilot error caused the June 1997 crash that killed the pilot and two instructors.
The report says the 70-year old pilot, Cliff Wells was disoriented and lost control of his single engine Cessna Continental.

Roanoke County supervisors are using some tricky parliamentary tools to bring Home Depot to town.

In Covington, Applied Extrusion Technologies is laying off more than 180 people.
A-E-T blames increased competition and lower demand for the plant's products.
That new multi-screen megaplex at Tanglewood Mall was too much for the old Towers Cinema.
Towers cleared its marquee, ripped out its seats and closed its doors -- a sign that Roanoke may have reached its capacity for movie theaters.

The Neighborhood Educational Opportunity Center will offer classes, counseling and other support services to local residents.

In the fifth inning, sosa hit an 0 and 1 pitch from Milwaukee reliever Bronswell Patrick into the street behind left field a 480 foot blast and his 61-st homer of the season.
Sosa would strike again this time in the ninth sending this shot over the left field wall and out on the street a two run homer tieing him with Mark McGwire at 62. Sosa homered in all three games of the series with Milwaukee.
Mark McGwire left last night's game with Houston with minor back spasms. McGwire hasn't homered since getting 62 Tuesday night.
