Virginia has executed 30 killers by lethal injection since it became a choice.
But prison officials say they've tested the chair every month since '94, and will test it twice next week.
Stewart's attorney says he may have made the decision as a result of a continuing depression he's suffered.
His execution is scheduled for next Wednesday.

A Lynchburg man faces drunk driving charges after a fiery crash on Route 460 last night.

Police say 28- year- old Charles Miles Junior was headed east on 460 when he lost control of his pickup and hit the guardrail.
The truck flipped several times and then caught fire.. a passerby helped pull Miles to safety.
Miles suffered head injuries in the crash and is listed in fair condition today at Lynchburg General Hospital.
Another man in the truck.. 38- year- old David Crider.. was treated and released.
Police say alcohol was to blame for the accident.
