For the third time in seven months, educators are trying to answer charges of racial unfairness in the Lynchburg school system.
A citizens' committee still wants to know why so many black students are being suspended and so few black teachers are being hired.

Parents were especially concerned about Robert S. Payne Elementary where 185 suspensions were handed down last year.. 143 or 74 percent of them involved black students.
That number seems high until you take into account that 80 percent of the school's base population is black.
Educators say it's also important to look at WHY the kids are being disciplined: nearly 150 of the suspensions were for acts of flagrant misconduct.. and most of those occurred IN the classroom.

A teenaged bank robbery suspect went before the federal magistrate in Roanoke today.

Christian David Cahours (COW-ers) turned himself in Monday.
But his lawyer says he's unable to post bond.
Attorney David Damico told the judge Cahours' parents are what he called: (EYE-tin-erant Evangelists) itinerant evangelists, that their 18-year old son has been essentially living on his own for the past four or five years and has no money.

(Cow-ers) Cahours allegedly admitted to the F-B-I that he took 17-hundred dollars from a teller at the First American Federal Savings Bank last month.
The teller says she immediately recognized the young man as the same person who held up the bank three weeks earlier.

A plea in court saves a former Giles County Supervisor from time behind bars.
Bobby Williams pleaded NO CONTEST today to a misdemeanor and had his felony wire-tapping charges reduced.

The day the indictment was handed up Williams attempted suicide but eventually returned as a supervisor.

Thousands of them.
Animal rights protestors released about seven thousand minks from an English breeding farm.
But fewer than one thousand escaped.
Many of those were run over or shot.
An animal rights group claimed responsibility for the raid.
Minks which are bred for their fur are known as vicious predators. Police have warned residents to safeguard their pets- because many minks are still on the loose in the region.
