((The result might have been expected...but the impact was still dramatic.
For only the third time in the history of the Republic, the President
faces the threat of impeachment hearings.
The vote in the House judiciary committee was split along party
lines...dominated by the Republican majority...which is recommending an
open-ended impeachment inquiry in the Monica Lewinsky affair.
REP. HENRY HYDE/JUDICIARY COMMITTEE CHAIR/R-IL.: ARBITRARY
TIME LIMITS PUT MORE STRESS AND STRAIN ON THE SYSTEM. THEY DON'T HELP
US.
It was an often emotionally-charged day of debate...which has left some
Democrats questioning whether workable bi-partisanship will ever emerge.
REP. SHEILA JACKSON LEE/JUDICIARY COMMITTEE/D-TX.:
And some Republicans are weighing in on whether they think impeachment
is now more likely.
REP. BOB BARR/JUDICIARY COMMITTEE/R-GA.: IF THE EVIDENCE BEARS OUT WHAT IT SEEMS TO INDICATE THEN IT SEEMS TO BE YES...BUT HAVE TO LOOK AT ALL THE EVIDENCE.
The chief Republican investigator HAD outlined 15 offenses...more than
Kenneth Starr's original list of 11...which he argued could be grounds
for impeaching the President.
DAVID SCHIPPERS/CHIEF REPUBLICAN INVESTIGATOR: FIRST, THERE
MAY BE SUBSTANTIAL AND CREDIBLE EVIDENCE THAT THE PRESIDENT WAS INVOLVED
IN A CONSPIRACY WITH MONICA LEWINSKY TO OBSTRUCT JUSTICE.
But Democrats accused the G-O-P of simply re-packaging the independent
counsel's case to try and pump up the Republican cause.
The President was busy at a political event ...clearly preferring to
shake hands rather than shake his fists at the Republicans.
JONATHAN FREED/CBS NEWS: SO NOW IT GOES TO THE FULL HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES FOR A VOTE...WHERE THE REPUBLICAN MAJORITY IS AGAIN EXPECTED TO PUSH IT THROUGH. THE HEARINGS WOULD LIKELY BEGIN AFTER THE
