Heroin takes a deadly toll close to home.
Two men are dead another is in the hospital tonight after apparently overdosing on a batch of potent heroin in Roanoke.

((Police discovered the first victim--38 year old Charles Edward Roberts--dead inside a relative's home in the 400 block of Cherry Hill Road last Saturday.
The second victim--29 year old Mark Allen Musgrove of Vinton--was found dead four days later in room 205 at this Budget Inn hotel in the 2300 block of Williamson Road.
Manager Andy Patel recalled meeting him.

Police say a third man-- 48 year old James David Johnston apparently took the heroin, was left unconcious at a home along Hampton Avenue to a local hospital.))

It was a deadly night on the train tracks in Danville.
Authorities say a 29-year-old Danville man was struck and killed by a Norfolk-Southern train shortly before 6 thirty this evening.
The train's conductor says he blew the horn at the man, who was reportedly laying on the tracks just west of the Monument Street railroad crossing when he was hit.
Charges have NOT been filed in connection with the incident.
Governor Jim Gilmore has ordered state flags around the Commonwealth be lowered to half staff SATURDAY.
It's in honor of the Richmond police officer killed in the line of duty this week.
Officer Thomas McMahon (mc-MAY-uhn) was shot and killed Wednesday by a former Marine who'd led police on a high speed chase.
The Governor called the officer's death a "senseless tragedy."
State flags should remain at half staff until sunset TOMORROW.

He was just 16 when he killed his mother's boyfriend.. today Kevin Lamont Dammones (DAY-minz) pleaded guilty to the crime.
Dammones, now 21, was only recently found competent to stand trial.
He shot Michael Smith in 1994 after Smith allegedly beat Dammones' mother.
Dammones pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter.. he'll be sentenced in December.
The search is on in Henry County for two robbery suspects and a stolen pickup truck.
Authorities say two black men robbed a North Carolina jewelry store Wednesday.
They fled to Virginia and were spotted near the Martinsville Speedway.
This morning someone stole a black Chevy pickup truck from a Ridgeway convenience store.
Authorities believe the truck thieves might be the jewelry store robbers.

A Pulaski County school principal allowed a seven-year-old boy to return to school today -- after punishing him for bringing a squirt gun to school.
Seven year old Grant Adkins says he did not know his sister stuffed a water gun in his backpack until it tumbled out in class.
The boy was suspended for a day because the principal said the toy looked like a real gun.

Bevins says she suspended Grant for one day, not two, because the boy did not MEAN to bring the squirt gun to school.
But she says the school prohibits imitation weapons to protect the children.
Between 1992 and 1996, Virginia spent 400 million dollars on six new prisons and one expansion.

Today, we've imported 18- hundred prisoners from other states to help pay for prisons that would otherwise be sitting empty.
There are another 12-hundred-and-50 on the way in January.
The state Senate Finance Committee got the latest numbers today.

Virginia prisoners are expected to finally fill up the existing prisons by the year 2003.
Surplus space in juvenile institutions is expected to last even longer.
This year's near million dollar prestigious Nobel Peace Prize was split between two winners.
The 1998 Nobel Peace Prize goes to Protestant leader David Trimble and Catholic leader John Hume.
Both have spent the last three decades working to end religious conflict in Northern Ireland.
The two say the prize is an honor for everyone who voted yes to the Catholic-Protestant power sharing deal.
Radford High School students marched out of class today, saying field trips and extracurricular activities are an important part of the school day.
Students protested the state's new Standards of Learning, which suggest moving field trips and extracurricular activities to evenings and weekends so they don't take up class time.
But that would mean many would miss a foreign language competition or a museum tour.

A City construction inspector says it was sloppy work...

Keene was convicted of doing business withOUT a license, and the judge forwarded a felony count to CIRCUIT court for trial.

Still to co9e in sports, the lowdown on game two of the Express's season, pregame reports on the tech and UVa tilts,
also Danville native and racing legend Wendell Scott is approaching another hall of fame milestone.
The Roanoke Express travelled to Hampton Roads trying to lift their record to the.500 mark. They were successful although they trailed after two periods. But Duane Hamer ties it at 1-1 in the third and then Mike peron scores the game winner at the 14:12 mark. Daniel Berthiaume registeres 23 saves as the Express win 2-1. Roanoke is now 1-and-1 on the season.
Tonight, Dave Moose Morissette became the first Express player in the franchise's six year history to play in the NHL. Moose scored the Express's first goal and looked much the same tonight in a Montreal uniform.

Morissette warmed up with his new teamates in what would be his NHL start for the canadiens in their third game of the season. Moose will be 27 years old in December and is a hot topic in Montreal for the fact that he worked many years in the minor leagues to get to the show, including a stint in Roanoke.
After these pregame warm ups tongight, Morissette would go on to play 4 minutes and 7 seconds going outt on 8 shifts and he had one shot and three hits.
His Montreal Canadiens would go on to tie the capittals 2-2. Montreal is now 2-0 and 1 on the season.
One bigtime track note on the late, great NASCAR star - Webdell Scott
The driving legend from Danville will be among this year's inductees into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in Alabama.
The official announcement won't come until next Wednesday, but News 7 sports has learned that Scott has earned a spot in the hall.
This afternoon we talked with Scott's son about the significance of being inducted during NASCAR's 50th anniversary season.

Rick Mast has hit an all time lowq in the Remingtotn Ford. Today, he failed to make his second straight race, unab

For weeks, there have been rumors Mast is changing teams and will soon be driving Bill Elliott's second car. This could seal that deal.

Virginia tech officals comfirmed today, that there are still around 3 thousand tickets remaining for tomorrow's 1pm Big East homecoming clash between the Hokies and the Temple Owls.
