An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Monday on the body of a 34-year old man who died while in the custody of Roanoke police.
Officers arrested Derek Glenn Poindexter late Saturday night for possession of crack cocaine.
A police press release indicated he was on the way to the city jail when an officer noticed he was chewing and trying to swallow an object and ordered him to spit it out.
When Poindexter refused, the officer used pepper spray on him, reportedly to keep him from swallowing the object.
Police say Poindexter began to spit the object out, became ill and lost consciousness. He was taken to Community Hospital where he died.
The report does not reveal what Pointexter had in his mouth, and the name of the officer involved was not released.
Meanwhile, authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

Officials say it will take another couple of days to determine the cost of the damages.
