An autopsy is scheduled to be performed Monday on the body of a 34-year old man who died while in the custody of Roanoke police.

Officers arrested Derek Glenn Poindexter late Saturday night for possession of crack cocaine.
A police press release indicated he was on the way to the city jail when an officer noticed he was chewing and trying to swallow an object and ordered him to spit it out.
When Poindexter refused, the officer used pepper spray on him, reportedly to keep him from swallowing the object.
Police say Poindexter began to spit the object out, became ill and lost consciousness. He was taken to Community Hospital where he died.

The report does not reveal what Pointexter had in his mouth, and the name of the officer involved was not released.

Meanwhile,authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

A pipe burst on the second floor near the administrative wing dousing the area with two-inches of water.
Hospital officials say the patients have been returned to their rooms and phones and computers are once again back in working order.
Officials say it will take another couple of days to determine the cost of the damages.

Pretty soon, when you go Krogering, you'll be shopping at the biggest supermarket chain in the country.
Kroger Company is merging with Oregon's Fred Meyer.
The new Kroger will operate 22-hundred stores in 31 states. [dominion solutions]
Roanoke County's Dominion Holdings is growing.
The corporate marketing and consulting group acquired two companies from Chicago and New Jersey, worth 13-and-a-half million dollars.
That makes four acquisitions for Dominion this year. [98-33]
Roanoke's very own had another good quarter.
Valley Bank profits were up 86 percent from the third quarter of 1997.
For the first nine months of this year, the bank's earnings are 130-percent higher than last year. [DOW JONES PRE PRO]
On Wall Street, the Dow picked up 36, ending the week at 84-52.
The Nasdaq was up 73.

But the Cavaliers lost their captain Anthony Poindexter for the remainder of the season.

Poindexter was injuried when he took a helmet to his left knee on this play with over 5 minutes left in the game.

McCue said Poindexter will have x-rays and an M-R-I Monday to determine the extent of his injury.

Rusty Wallace started sixth but he dominated the field and was declared the winner of the Dura Lube 500 after the race was stopped because of rain with over 50 laps to go.

After about 50 laps in the book, Wallace would take over the top spot and he had about a 3 second lead with over 200 laps left to go.
Points leader Jeff Gordon's car was tight early in the race and he was running in the 13-th spot on the track.
Then Dale Jarrett took his car to the Pits. Jarrett was suffering from flu like symptons and he turned the wheel over to Michael Waltrip, who failed to qualify the Woods brothers car.
Dale Earnhardt had a fast car and he was running in the third spot two cars behind Wallace at the halfway point.
The race was red flagged because of rain and after about a 40 minute delay with the sun going down Wallace was declared the winner of the Dura Lube 500.

Three southwest Virginians are hoping to bring a world title back to the Commonwealth.
The International Title Fights in Sport Ju-Jitsu are in Canada, this year.
And the trio from our region is hoping to help the U-S team bring home the belt.

((Martial Arts brought Ric Anderton, Jinjer Van Antwerp and Asa Herring together.
Each has a different life story but here at the Nautilus fitness center in Wytheville, they found sport Ju-Jitsu in common.
It's a relatively new competion often confused with an event you may have seen at the Commonwealth Games, point Karate.

The trio leaves for Canada and the World Championships in November.
They are considered amatuer athletes and part of their fight is drumming up sponsors to help them meet travel and competiton costs.
They say they're are a good investment. Asa Herring was a Bronze Medal winner at the last World Championships. Ric Anderton is one of the coaches of the US National Team and Jinger Van Antwerp was named the team's most improved member.
