Jury selection got underway yesterday in the capital murder trial of Emmitt Cressell Junior.
The 37 year old is accused of burning and beheading Garnett "G-P" Johnson more than a year ago.
Six potential jurors have already been chosen- the judge expects to have a jury seated by tomorrow. [Take Graphic Map]

But his attorney successfully argued that the indictment against him was defective because a word was left out of it.

The Virginia State Bar has publicly reprimanded Christiansburg Attorney Terry Teel.
The disciplinary committee cited incidents where Teel missed deadlines in the course of handling estates and failed to post a bond before acting as a court- appointed guardian.

Beginning Friday--camp fires, and the use of charcoal, coal or wood-burning appliances will be prohibited on national forest land unless there's a posted exception.
And, smokers are only allowed to light-up in designated areas.
The fall season and extremely dry conditions in the forests are prompting the restrictions to prevent wildfires--like this one-- that scorched nearly 250 acres in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests in Rockbridge County about a year and a half ago.
Since August there have been 21 fires in both national forests-- that's 15 to 20 more than in previous years.

Meantime, the dry conditions have already produced a fire in the Shenandoah National Park in Augusta County.
The flames have charred some 600 acres.
The fire began Sunday and does not threaten any private property.
It was only about a quarter-mile from the Appalachian Trail, but the trail is still open.
The cause is not known.

The typical accident scenario is a motorist pulling into the path of an on coming vehicle.
That's what police say happened to Sherry Ann West, who was killed two months ago.
Now THESE signs are also going up, warning motorists to watch out for each other.

A million- dollar lawsuit has been filed against the estate of a Buena Vista man killed on Interstate 81 on July Fourth.

Kevin Chittum, five passengers in his car and tractor-trailer driver Jerry Gregory were all killed when Chittum's car crossed the rain-slicked median and ran into the path of Gregory's fuel truck.
The suit filed this month in Botetourt County claims Chittum was negligent when he passed a tractor trailer in the rain and his car hydroplaned.

Published reports indicate that Gregory's sons filed the suit.
After the crash, it was discovered that the girl being raised by Chittum and his fiancee Whitney Rogers, who was also killed in the crash, had been switched with another child at birth.

State police say a van traveling on the entrance ramp pulled into traffic to avoid hitting two other cars stopped on the ramp.
The van then hit another car. The driver, 18 year old Jeremy Smith of Blue Ridge was charged with drinking underage, but his blood alcohol was below the legal limit of point-zero-eight.
One person was taken to the hospital.

Roanoke's rocket has been out of sight for several weeks, but soon it will be part of the city's skyline once again.

The jupiter rocket was removed from its old perch near the Wasena Bridge in August.
It's now in a Roanoke warehouse, where it's being repaired and repainted.
Built in 1959 and brought to Roanoke in '65, it will take its place near the Virginia Museum of Transportation and the Second Street Bridge in a couple of weeks.
