Good evening everybody and welcome to a night of champions on Friday Football Extra.
In the next 30 minutes we will crown 6 regional champs and give away our grand prize trip to the Fiesta Bowl as we wrap up our 15th anniversary trivia contest.
For the most part, this has been a night of blowouts.
[graphic=salem/heritage]

We begin over in Salem where the Spartans had revenge on their minds against a Heritage team that ended their seasonlast year in this very same game. But Steve Mason says, Willis White's team learned it's lesson in 97.

((The Spartans have have played and won a fare share of Regional titles, but this was personal.
Chris Booker, one of Heritage's best players who helped pioneer last years stunning overtime win against salem would not play due to a sveerely sprained right ankle.
Meanwhille, all of salem's pistons were firing and on the Spartas first possession, quarterback Andy Mullins would hook up with Jamie Garst for a 27 yard touchdown connection on a play the pair could execute in their sleep.)) ((:))
Salem would have to settle for that 6-nothing lead for two quarters as both defenses stepped up. Heritage prevented the big play and at times disrupted the Salem offense. ((:)) But The Spartans depth finally started to wear on the Pioneers. Mullins opend the fourth quarter with his second touchdown pass of the game, a 44 yarder to receiver J.R. Andrews. ((:))
Up 12 nothing, Mullins put the game out of reach with a four yard boot leg to put Salem a head 19-zip with 9:49 left to play. ((:))
The Spartans would score one more touchdown set up by Alex hailey. The junior punched in his time card and put on his hard hat to go 55 yards down the right sideline. Salem goes on to capture the Region III championship with a decisive 26-nothing voctory over Heritage. ((:)) ((:))

The Bulldogs did an excellent job of guarding the dog house tonight as they simply whipped Richlands 42-to-13 in the divison four, region four game.

[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Martinsville/Richlands vs. Martinsville;]

The Blue Tornadoes touched down in Martinsville after a rugged three and a half hour ride from far southwest Virginia.
Richlands should have stayed on the bus. Danny Wade's pass is tipped by the defense, but it falls right in to the hands of receiver Brian Niblett who picks up 37 yards on the play.
Halfway into the first, Wade gives the rock to Marcus Hairston and he scores from 17 yards with ease as he has all season. It's 7-to-nothing Bulldogs.
Later in the first, Wade keeps, rolls right and cuts it straight ahead. He walks in from 8 yards away and Martinsville has a 14-to-nothing lead.
On the Bulldogs next possession. Hairston goes right up the gut from the 13 yard line and he score to make it a 21-to-nothing game at the halftime break.
In the third, Richlands goes to the air. Adam Collins let it fly, but Niblett get the pick and then makes like Primetime with a 45 yard return. He gets in the endzone and it's 35-to-zip.
Down by 35 in the fourth the Tornadoes finally got on the board. Collins pass is pulled down by Ricky McGlothlin. He finds some daylight and the endzone as he scores from 42 yards out.

Coach Mike Scharnus had to use routes 29 and 58 to get to Dry Fork, but it was 21 and 89 that would get the Red Devils on the road to victory.
One fourth and four the Trojans are back to punt, but Chuck Echols can't handle the bad snap and number 21 Andre Morgan hammers Echols. The ball pops in the hands of number 89 Matt Carr.
Nine plays later Rustburg goes for three from the Tunstall 16, but Andrew Thompson's kick if wide left and we're still scoreless.
Tunstall would end its next possession with a repeat performance. On fourth down from the 30, the snap goes high, and Andre Morgan slams the punter, jars the ball loose and Carr falls on the pigskin for 6. The 21 to 89 combo is cooking!!

But Culpeper shocked the home folks when Joel Pearson ran in from five yards out to put the Blue Devils in front 7-to-nothing. A field goal made it 10-to-nothing.
Amherst hasn't had to come from behind this season, but Jason Cox runs up the middle from four yards out to cut the Culpeper lead to 10-to-7.
Early in the third quarter, Seneca Sandidge runs around the left side. He gets popped, the ball shoots out right into the hands of Cox who takes it in from 30 yards out. It's suddenly 14-to-10 Amherst.
Cox would do his thing one more time on the final play of the game scoring from 20 yards away.

(------------)
[VO-NAT]
[SUPER=51-Covington/Narrows vs. Covington; :00]

The Cougars were looking to get it done in a hurry tonight in this title tilt.
And they would have little trouble early with the Green Wave. After going up 6 to nothing, quarterback Brent May will scramble and find Travis Bogar for the 52 yard touchdown. It's 13-to-nothing Cougars.
The Covington offense was at its best throughout the first half as the team scores from 20 yards out with Antonio Hill taking the pitch and dashing in up them middle. It's now 21-to-nothing.
It's also "May-Day!!!"
With just a few minutes left in the first half, the Cougars passing attack would do it one more time. This time May hooks up with Darren Venable for a 34 yard pass play. May is money and it's 28-to-nothing at the half.
The Green Wave would try to at least make it respectable in the second half, but the Cougars would stop them cold on this fourth down play as Chris Dolan gets the pick in the endzone.
Covington's offense just kept things rolling as Hill caps off an 80 yard drive with this 7 yard touchdown run, as the Cougars take a 34-to-nothing lead.
The Cougars were just unstoppable tonight. Jason White gets the pitch and the score down the left sideline for 50 yards, moving the ball all thte way to the one.
May scored from the one to make it a 41-to-nothing game.

Giles would strike again on the secondplay of its next possession. Steele gets his second TD of the night this time on a 48 yard dash of the middle. It's 14 to nothing at this point.
The Spartans defense was just as stingy tonight. Number 21 Jeffrey Dickerson picks off this Jason Worley pass and he returns it to the Spartans' 45 yard line.
Two plays after that, the man of Steele does it again. Watch as he sneaks his way into the pile, pops out and eventually motors 45 yards for his third TD of the third quarter. It's 22 to nothing Spartans at the half.
Giles would come out in the second half and completely "Steele" the show. Who else but Steele does it again. This time it's a 70 yard spring to the zone. It's his 4th touchdown of the night and Giles pushes the blowout in Bristol to 28-to-nothing.
Giles would completely dominate the battle as Cooney Ratcliff gets into the act with this 8 yard score.

Well, it hardly seems possible but way back on August 21st we told you about our plans for a special trivia question segment in honor of our 15th anniversary season.
Over the past 12 weeks we've crowned 12 winners from the several thousand entries we received over that period.
We talked about everything from Nikki Fisher's jeri curl to Allen Iverson's dominating performance against Glass in the state playoffs in 1992.
Tonight we're going to name our grand prize winner of the all expense paid trip to the Fiesta Bowl. We will do that right after this quick break.
And as we go to commercial, here are the names of the 12 weekly winners who are in the running to win that trip.

After several spins they pulled out a winner, and that lucky person is... Ron Epperly of Martinsville.
Ron was our last qualifier by winning the drawing from last week, and he also gets the grand prize trip to the Fiesta Bowl that includes roundtrip airfare on USAirways, four days and three nights accomodations at the Scottsdale Princess Resort Hotel in Arizona, plus two game tickets and car rental.
Congratuations Ron Epperly and thanks to everyone who played our 15th anniversary trivia contest.
