((Iraq says a U-N weapons team carried out a SURPRISE inspection today -- the FIRST, according to Iraq's official news agency -- since Iraq BLOCKED inspectors almost THREE WEEKS ago. U-N officials would only say they completed a fourth day of work.
SOT President Bill Clinton, aptn

"They are testing Iraq's commitment and I hope that Iraq will comply as it said it would with the letter and the spirit of the U-N resolutions, and give them the information they seek." But already, SOME of that information has become a problem. Iraq reported its COOPERATION with the snap inspection, as Iraqi DIPLOMATS wrangled over DOCUMENTS requested by INSPECTION HEADQUARTERS in New York. ONE document is from the Iran-Iraq war. Inspectors say it shows how many MISSILES, capable of carrying chemical and biological weapons, were FIRED -- AND that there are a FEW unaccounted for. Iraq called the request PROVOCATIVE, rather than PROFESSIONAL, but has offered to allow UNSCOM to LOOK at the documents, in the presence of the U-N envoy to Iraq.
SOT Sandy Berger, National Security Advisor, aptn

" If we reach the conclusion that the answers to these questions is negative, we are prepared to act......." o/c Iraq says it will offer cooperation...but UNSCOM wants submission. And that's something it will NEVER get. Tough talk, but at least one diplomat here says the war of words does not yet seem AGGRESSIVE enough, to trigger American air strikes.
