A Roanoke man charged with starting a downtown apartment fire that killed six people is expected to go on trial in early February.

Michael Jerrod Clements was formally charged today with six six counts of homicide and one count of arson.
He was arrested earlier this month.

He faces a maximum seven life terms in prison if convicted. Two court appointed attorneys will represent Clements in the case.

Salem authorities say they've determined who set at least one of seven suspicious fires at an apartment complex this summer.

Yesterday, a 15-year old boy pleaded "NO" contest to arson in connection with the July 28th fire at the "Willow River" apartments. The teenager also entered "NO" contest pleas to a petty larceny charge and two counts of statutory burglary. Police say the boy set the apartment on fire while torching some basketball trading cards he had apparently stolen and was supposed to return. Two months ago, a ten-year-old was acquitted of setting an August 7th fire at the complex. Officials say there is still an open investigation into the other fires.

Authorities are trying to figure out why someone set a Roanoke apartment on fire.

The blaze began around one in an apartment building on Staunton Avenue in Northwest Roanoke.
A district fire chief says the blaze was deliberately set.
Just a few minutes before the fire, police were called to a domestic dispute in the neighborhood-- authorities believe the two events were related.
No one was hurt in that Roanoke fire.

More than 300 acres of the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests are burning.
Firefighters from as far away as Oklahoma are fighting the blaze near Deerfield in western Augusta County.
Officials say the fire began on Saturday.
Firefighters set up containment lines, but the blaze jumped them.
The cause is under investigation.

Virginia Tech has pulled out of a demonstration project for a magnetically levitated rail system.
Florida-based American Maglev Technology wanted to build a mile-long test bed as part of the Smart Road project in Montgomery County.
But school officials said there was no meaningful research to be done on the project.
American Maglev officials say they'll seek a new partner and a new test site.
