Firefighters from across the country will spend Thanksgiving battling an Augusta County blaze.

The wildfire in George Washington and Jefferson National Forests has now consumed fifteen-hundred and thirty acres.


Some 450 firefighters from as far away as New Mexico and New Hampshire are joining forces to contain the blaze that was sparked Saturday.
They say the rain is NOT expected to help much.
Officials suspect the fire was caused by a human.

Authorities say they WOULD charge a North Carolina man with capital murder in connection with the death of a victim found in Franklin County, but the suspect is dead. Frank Kirkland, a known drug dealer, took his own life while in jail after being arrested on unrelated charges.

((:)) ((:)) ((Two player call ups to lowell, The Pete Brearly trade, and JF Tremblay's seat on the IR, and Chris Cantu's one game suspension are factors that have left the Express with 17 players in uniform, one short of the ECHL limit. ((:)) Cantu came off the IR this past Saturday and registered five points, including three goals, his first hat trick of the season and his sore knee is improving. ((:))
Captain Doug Searle is making his second Express tour. The 6 4" 220 pound defenseman spent the 1996-97 season in Roanoke before heading to the Pee Dee Pride last year. His return has been a success so far. ((:))
The Express has the best team goals against average in the league, yielding just 2.62 a game. One other note, the Express front office has beefed up the hospitality suite at the Roanoke Civic Center. The league has fined Cox 10-thousand dollars for taking this swing at Tennessee Oiler quarterback Steve McNair. Cox received two unnecessary roughness penalities in the game.
Cox has been fined nearly 150-thousand dollars in his 8 N-F-L seasons.
