The bargaining session was the first in 13 days between negotiators from both sides.

Jean, It's not looking good. The NBA Labor talks resumed today after a 13 break. Now during the first few hours of one of the longest sessions yet, NBA commisioner David Stern made a plea to save the season. Talks took a turn for the worse when Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning said..."this lockout won't end until the owners get as much as they can out of the players...it comes down to greed on their part". The sides were still meeting in mid evening.

Virginia executed its 13th death row prisoner tonight, and he died asking a question.

Kevin Cardwell was pronounced dead tonight at 9:05. Asked if he had a final statement, Cardwell said -- QUOTING --:

``Personally, yeah. Why was all them sick people looking at me through that glass?''
The reference was to witnesses who attend executions.

Virginia prison officials say a different death row inmate may have tried to kill himself this week -- instead of waiting for the state to do it.

A guilty verdict today for a Collinsville man charged with a deadly shooting at the Stanley Furniture plant.

Philip Grady Boatman was convicted today of second degree murder for the death of Daniel Mussleman.
The shooting happened in April in the parking of the furniture plant.
The prosecution argued Boatman was jealous over an affair his estranged wife was having with the victim.

A medical examiner's report verifies police suspicions. It appears Derek Poindexter was trying to swallow cocaine when a Roanoke policeman hit him with pepper spray.

But test results indicate what he spit out was cocaine.
And the official cause of death is acute cocaine poisoning.
Poindexter's family isn't satisfied, still blaming police for his death.

In addition to those coming off welfare, the program will offer low- interest loans to residents who can't get credit elsewhere.

Most loans helped families purchase or repair a car they needed to get to work or stay in school.

The National Institute on Occupational Safety and Health says Roanoke's fire department should improve safety and training procedures.

They looked into a fire last summer in a vacant house on Campbell Avenue. Part of the porch collapsed and hurt two firefighters, one of them seriously.
The report says the fire department should have a safety officer on the scene of major fires.

The players union and the league are together after a 13 day layoff. One good sign in these talks...Michael Jordan made a surprise appearance at the NBA labor talks. Jordan's agent said his client would not get involved again until discussions in the lockout got serious. If a solution is not found in the next few weeks, the entire season will be scrapped.

((It seems Jeff Jones's former employer haunts him no matter where he goes. Just a short distance from his color analyst seat, in Cameron Hall, is a picture of the 1977 VMI team. The assistant coach...none other than Pete Gillen, Jones's replacement at Virginia. While he is in his first season at UVa, Jones is making his debut as a telivision color analyist. UVa ahtletic director Terry Holland, who sat just a few seats away from his former basketball coach, said Jones would make a good analyst. But Jeff is using his temp job for visibility to hopefully improve his contacts and resume.
