(( The historic assembly of the International Space Station is now underway, but it was no easy task.
The initial docking went smoothly, but the weight of the shuttle's arm prevented the two modules from a perfect alignment. Once the arm was released, the modules were properly mated.
Bob Castle/Lead Flight Director)
Earlier in the day, with the U-S node, Unity, hanging out of the Endeavor's payload bay, Commander Bob Cabana positioned the shuttle upside down over Zarya, so as not to block Russia's communication with the module.

(nats/Mission Control) We are please to announce.. You have a go for

grapple..
A camera on Zarya captured these amazing pictures that even the Endeavor crew couldn't see...
The two modules are so massive that Astronaut Nancy Currie had to rely on cameras and computer graphics to guide the shuttles robotic arm as it reached out and grabbed Zarya.

(quick nats of successful grappling) Houston, Endeavor, we have

grappled. we're halfway home for the day..

(SOT/Mission Control) "..a lot of people exhaling down here - we had a

terrific view from down here watching Nancy's good work"
The second half of the job was equally intricate. Currie, once again blinded by the two modules, slowly brought the Russian module within 6 inches of Unity.

(nats of them talking about firing jets..)

Finally, Commander Cabana fired the shuttle's thrusters, forcing the two modules together and sealing the crew's place in history.
