The statewide burning ban has been lifted.
Governor Gilmore said yesterday recent rainfalls may not have relieved drought conditions, but they DID reduce the threat of forest fires.
So far this year more than 6-thousand acres of forest have burned.

In his first court appearance after being extradited to Virginia, a man who walked away from the Martinsville city farm nearly 25 years ago is expected plead not guilty today.

Alfred Martin will be arraigned on larceny and escape charges.
In 1974, he walked away from a one year sentence for selling marijuana.
A few weeks ago, he was found living in Michigan, was arrested and sent back to Martinsville.
Martin's lawyers say they'll try to have the original drug conviction overturned.

Two juveniles are among those indicted yesterday on drug charges in Radford.
Indictments were handed down against 14 people total.
Radford Police say most of the charges were for the distribution of crack cocaine.
They are continuing to search for and arrest those indicted.

A Canadian Company is bringing some 40 jobs to Wythe County.
Northside Industries is planning to set up shop in the Fairview Industrial park.
The company makes fuel tanks for the trucking industry.
A Northside spokesman says the company chose Wythe County, in part, because of its close proximity to interstate highways and the Volvo-GM truck plant in Pulaski County.

Yesterday, police received a tip on what they believed were the whereabouts of the stolen baby rhinocerous that used to sit alongside Route 460 in Bedford.

Some people thought it had turned up atop the Star City Diner in downtown Roanoke, so police paid a vist to see if it was the missing baby.
They checked out the statue, including its wings, and determined it was NOT the stolen one.
