((Congressional offices are normally quiet at this time of year...but with the historic impeachment debate in the House now only three days away, the phones are buzzing with opinions about what should become of the President. While that was happening, Mr. Clinton was in the Middle East...promoting his peace initiative...but he could not escape questions about his political future. The President was asked if he would admit to lying under oath.
CLINTON: I DON'T BELIEVE IT'S IN THE INTEREST OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE TO GO THROUGH THIS IMPEACHMENT PROCESS AND HAVE A TRIAL IN THE SENATE...THAT'S WHY I HAVE OFFERED TO MAKE EVERY EFFORT TO MAKE ANY REASONABLE COMPROMISE WITH CONGRESS.
The White House has been trying to convince moderate Republicans to vote against impeachment...and for the lesser punishment of censure. Estimates are that some 15 G-O-P votes are needed to be sure of victory. On Monday some of those moderate Republicans began declaring they would vote for impeachment but leaving the count too close to call..and one Republican, Christopher Shays of Connecticut, said his anti-impeachment stand is wavering, and that he wants to meet with Mr. Clinton. REP. CHRISTOPHER SHAYS/R-CT: AFTER HIS COMENTS FRIDAY IT'S UNSETTLING TO ME BECAUSE I THINK HE STILL DOESN'T GET IT, HE NEEDS TO CONVINCE ME AND THE AMERICAN PEOPLE HE IS NOT ABOVE THE LAW.
The House Republican leadership is still opposed to a vote on censure. The Vice President challenged that goes against the will of the people.
