LOCATOR: CAPITOL HILL.
NATSOT: ARTICLE ONE IS ADOPTED.
If you had just tuned in, you might not have realized that one of the
most sacred constitutional levers had just been pulled...
NATSOT: ARTICLE THREE IS ADOPTED.
...the President of the United States was impeached.
In largely partisan votes, the Republican-lead House of Representatives
approved two of the four articles of impeachment: perjury before a grand
jury...and obstruction of justice...in the Monica Lewinsky affair.
Mr. Clinton was in seclusion with a minister when the first vote was
taken. Later, with his wife and Democratic lawmakers at his side, he
asked the country to help him end what he called the politics of
SOT 16:27:15 (CLINTON): WE MUST GET RID OF THE...VENOM...AND
UNCONTROLLED ANGER...THAT IS NOT WHAT AMERICA DESERVES...THAT IS NOT
WHAT AMERICA IS ABOUT.
NATSOT: DEMCOCRATS WALKING OUT.
In a political show, the Democrats temporarily walked out of the House
to protest their failure to replace impeachment with a resolution of
And then there was this:
SOT 4405 (REP. BOB LIVINGSTON/R-LA.): I MUST SET THE EXAMPLE I HOPE
PRESIDENT CLINTON WILL FOLLOW.
The man the G-O-P nominated to be Speaker of the new Congress announced
he's stepping aside...because of having extra-marital affairs of his
own. It shook the House.
SOT (REP. TOM DELAY/MAJORITY WHIP/R-TX.): IT WAS ABOUT HONOR, AND
DECENCY, AND INTEGRITY AND THE TRUTH.
SOT (REP. DICK GEPHARDT/MINORITY LEADER/D-MO.): WE NEED TO STOP
DESTROYING IMPERFECT PEOPLE AT THE ALTAR OF AN OBTAINABLE MORALITY.
Then, in keeping with the will of the founding fathers...
NATSOT: HYDE PRESENTING ARTICLES TO SENATE OFFICER.
...the issue was formally handed off to the Senate.
STAND-UP (JONATHAN FREED/CBS NEWS): THE QUESTION NOW IS WILL THERE BE A
LENGTHY TRIAL IN THE SENATE...OR WILL A DEAL SOMEHOW BE REACHED TO AVOID

President Clinton's impeachment isn't a first-- It happened once before.
[Take Pinnacle page 1014]
The House of Representatives voted to impeach President Andrew Johnson in 1868.
[Next page 1015]
The Senate acquitted Johnson, and he completed President Lincoln's unexpired term as President.
[Next page 1016]
Years later Johnson was elected to the same body that came within one vote of removing him from office... becoming the first President elected to the Senate AFTER leaving the White House.
Most opinion polls show many Americans still want Clinton to remain in office.
But, opinions among some people in part of Southwestern Virginia are mixed.
David Johnson has local reaction.

((MINDY BARBER; GOING INTO THE FIELD AS AN EDUCATOR, I FIND IT REALLY SAD BECAUSE A LOT OF OUR STUDENTS COME TO US FOR SOME DIRECTION. THEY WANT TO TALK ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE GOVERNMENT. AND IT'S VERY HARD FOR US TO ADDRESS THAT.))
[OUT Q=ADDRESS THAT.]
Even before the House voted to impeach Clinton several graduates felt that was the way most congressmen should vote.
[IN Q=I KNOW PERJURY]
((MELISSA JENSIK; I KNOW PERJURY IS AN ILLEGAL OFFENSE IN THE CIVIL COURTS. AND I THINK IT SHOULD BE THE SAME FOR OUR PRESIDANCY AND FOR THE EXECUTIVE OFFICE.))

Others felt the vote was clearly partisan.
[IN Q=I JUST THINK]

[OUT Q=GOT CAUGHT.]
SOME FEEL THAT CLINTON SHOULD FOLLOW THE LEAD OF SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE ELECT BOB LIVINGSTON AND RESIGN.
[IN Q=HE NEEDS TO]
((ANDREA CHARITY; HE NEEDS TO SET AN EXAMPLE. HE HAS TAKEN BLAME FOR WHAT HE HAS DONE BUT HE NEEDS TO SET AN EXAMPLE. HE'S DONE WRONG AND HE NEEDS TO STEP DOWN.))
[OUT Q=STEP DOWN.]
[IN Q=I THINK CLINTON]
((WILLIAM BOWERS; I THINK CLINTON, FOR HIS OWN INTEREST, HE SHOULD RESIGN AS QUICK AS HE CAN.))
[OUT Q=AS HE CAN.]
((BUT, SO FAR THE PRESIDENT SAYS HE HASN'T CONSIDERED RESIGNING HIS OFFICE. NOW HIS FATE IS IN THE HANDS OF THE SENATE.

Vinny and Jets were tough all day as Testaverde hooks up with Wayne Chrebet on a seven yard score. It's 7-to-nothing in the first.
But Doug Flutie would ad lib his way through a screen to Thurman Thomas, who dances in from 25 yards out. It's 7-all at halftime.
The Jets got a field goal and then this 71 yard TD
from Testaverde to Dedric Ward in the second half.
The Jets win it 17-to-10 and wrap up the AFC East.
