Franklin County authorities have identified the two men they are looking for in connection with the beating death of a Roanoke man. The suspects are 29-year old Thomas Wayne Akers and 27-year old Timothy Dwayne Martin, both of Roanoke.

Officials suspect Akers and Martin robbed the 24-year old Hancock Steel worker. The two are still at large. They face capital murder and robbery charges. Sheriff's deputies who put their lives on the line may be looking at a raise.
The Governor's PROPOSED budget for 1999 includes a nine-point three percent pay raise for ALL deputies.

For counties, like Pulaski and Montgomery, that DON'T supplement deputy pay-- starting salary is a little more 21- thousand dollars-- with NO guarantee of a raise.
Whereas in Christiansburg-- starting pay is nearly 24- thousand with raises totally roughly 73-hundred dollars over the next five years.
Virginia Tech offers even more.
There police officers start out at more than 24-thousand dollars and can expect to make more than 28-thousand in five years.
The state's sheriffs must also compete with the Virginia State police.

Police arrested a Roanoke woman today for allegedly starving her baby daughter to death.
27-year old Crystal Denise Johnson is charged with murder and felony child neglect.
Her daughter Princess Johnson died in May of severe dehydration, 23 days after she was born.
Prosecutor Alice Ekirch (EE-kurch) says the little girl tested cocaine positive at birth.
Police arrested Crystal Johnson in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The company will make textiles used in automobile hoses.

Mel Fisher died at his home in Key West, Florida over the weekend, after a long fight with cancer.
The 76-year old adventurer brought in backhoes and spent several days near Montvale a few years ago, in a futile search for the legendary Beale Treasure.
Fisher's biggested find was a Spanish galleon loaded with gold, silver and jewels.
The Treasure of the (A-toe-cha) Atocha was valued at more than 400 million dollars.
