A full- scale manhunt continues this morning in Henry County after someone shot at a sheriff's deputy last night.

A murder in Franklin County over the weekend has officials searching that community.
Investigators hope an autopsy will help them find the killer of Wesley B. Smith of Roanoke. David Johnson reports.

(( Authorities say a local resident discovered a body in this field near the corner of Franklin Street and Saw Mill Road. Hubert Quinn's home is just yards away from the site. He said he noticed several investigators in the area and went down to check it out.

Authorities think the victim was from Roanoke and was in his mid-20s.

Morning fog is complicating the search for a man who shot at a sheriff's deputy last night in Henry County.
The manhunt began at about seven o'clock, when a deputy on patrol [take full screen map] stopped his car in the same area where James Stanley Taylor was murdered last week.

Officer H.D. Linkhous was NOT injured when his patrol car was hit by gunfire.

Seven lawsuits have been filed against the federal government in connection with one of Virginia's worst mining accidents.

The suits, filed by six widows of the eight miners killed and one survivor, claim federal mine inspectors overlooked safety violations at Southmountain Coal Company Mine Number Three.
The Wise County shaft exploded in December, 19-92, when a miner lit a cigarette underground.
Investigators concluded that widespread safety violations allowed methane and coal dust to build up to explosive levels.
