It happened in the village of Kan-JIK-soo-an-oo-joo-ak, about a thousand miles north of Montreal.

Nine people were killed when an avalanche smashed through a gymnasium wall. There's only one doctor there and not much in the way of hospitals, so some of the most seriously hurt were flown to Quebec City for treatment late this afternoon.
The toll could have been higher: hundreds were celebrating the New Year when the avalanche roared in.

Back in the states, a different kind of winter tragedy.
A disabled student in Edinboro, Pennsylvania froze to death overnight, after his wheelchair tipped over.
It happened on his way home from a New Year's Ever party. His body was not discovered until this morning.
Police say Justin Bradley had been offered a ride home, but turned it down.

This is anything but a happy new year's day for people who witnessed a bizarre and deadly accident in Houston.

It happened during a new year party last night in a Hyatt Hotel.
A 200 pound light fixture fell four stories into the lobby of the building.
It landed on a group of party-goers... one woman was killed and three other people were hurt.

Here in Virginia, a high-speed chase reached speeds of 100 miles per hour today, before police cars piled into the vehicle they were chasing.
It started in Patrick County and ended with the crash in Henry County.
State police say the driver faces a load of charges. At last check, they were not releasing his name.

The owner.. W-E Suddith.. also lived in the building, and he suffered burns in the fire.

He's served as Hurt's police chief since 1994... and has been with the department since 1992.
Moorefield will face two-term Sheriff Harold Plaster, who is expected to seek re-election.

Being the first has its perks.. the Millers received a basketful of baby goodies from the hospital.

We knew coming in UCLA could score, but we also knew the Bruins' defense was offensive!
Wisconsin's brute Ron Dayne makes the Bruins pay right off the bat with the 54 yard dash off left tackle. With 3:40 left in the first it's 7-to-nothing Badgers.
UCLA would rally behind the arm of quarterback Cade McNown. He would throw for 340 yards and UCLA went on top 21-to-14 in the second.
