Washington and Lee University students are dealing with the loss of a classmate tonight... one of four people killed in yesterday's pileup on interstate 81.

The Virginia Department of Transportation says it could be mid-week before both lanes of Interstate 81 Northbound are open in Rockbridge County.
Traffic is still slow-going in the area.
The crash is blamed on an ice-covered bridge, dense fog, and high speed.

The victims are: Douglas Hubert Austin of Atoka, Tennessee...
Dean Richard Muklevicz (muk-LEV-ich) of Memphis, Tennessee...
15 year old Leah Marie Nabors and her 19-year-old brother, Jon Nabors, both of Alabaster, Alabama.
Jon Nabors, his sister, and his parents, were on their way to Washington and Lee University, where Jon was about to begin his second semester as a freshman.

His mother, Doris Nabors is in VERY critical condition.. His father, Eddie Nabors was upgraded to "guarded" condition tonight.

Danville Police say a drunk driver might be to blame for an accident this afternoon involving a school bus.
It happened just before three on Route-265 near Holland Road.
The bus driver and one of her young students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
The only other student on the bus was not hurt.
Officers arrested Thomas (Scarce) Scearce at the scene and charged him with DUI.
They believe he drove his pickup truck into the bus, forcing IT off the road and over the embankment.
Elizabeth Dole may follow in her husbands footsteps making a bid for the Presidency.
Today Dole stepped down as President of the American Red Cross- Tonight Dole said she will seriously consider a presidential bid.

Folks in Wytheville are still feeling the affects of yesterday's natural gas pipeline explosion.
Officials still don't know what caused the pipeline to explode, sending flames 300- feet into the air.
A nearby house and business were destroyed.
Gas company employees have been working 'round the clock to restore service to customers.
Some workers haven't slept in two days but manage to stay awake.

Nearly 15-hundred customers were left without gas service in the Wytheville area.
Gas company officials say they'll continue to work 'round the clock until service is restored to everyone.
The owner of the motorcycle shop destroyed as a result of the explosion says he's planning to rebuild.
The intense heat from the explosion caused Dwight Grubb's shop to eventually go up in flames.
He'd been in business for 14- years.
And had just completed a new addition to the shop two weeks ago.

Grubb leased the property where his business was.
He says he hasn't decided whether he'll rebuild there or at another location.
A murder suspect arrested on an Indian reservation in New York State made his first appearance in Franklin County court today.
Thomas Akers was arraigned on capital murder charges for allegedly killing Wesley Smith in Franklin County just before Christmas.
Tribal police found Akers and Timothy Martin driving the victim's car.
Martin is also charged with capital murder.
He's still in New York but deputies plan to drive him back to Franklin County once the weather improves.
Former Wrestler Jesse Ventura is now officially Governor Ventura.

One thousand people are losing their jobs now that a local sewing company is shutting down two plants.
The Pluma plant in Rocky Mount will close in April.
225-people will be out of work.
Pluma lost money all year and this plant could not keep a full staff.

The plant in Eden, North Carolina is also closing.
About six hundred fifty people there will lose their jobs but can fill positions elsewhere.

3- hundred demonstrators marched on police headquarters in Riverside California.
They want to know why a 19-year old was shot dead by police.
It was 2-am last Monday-
Officers say (Tie-ee-sha) Tyisha Miller was inside her
locked car with a gun on her lap. She appeared unconscious.
Her family called police saying the girl was sick.
Officers say when they broke the window to try to help her, that's when Miller tried to shoot them so they shot back.
The girl was shot 12 times - all of the officers are now on leave.

Riverside's mayor says they'll have an open investigation into what took place.
Americans could have more contact with Cubans-
The Clinton Administration is expected to announce tomorrow a plan that would allow that.
Among the changes, more Americans would be allowed to send money to needy Cubans, direct mail between the two countries would be allowed and there would be more direct charter flights to Cuba.

A raid on a Bedford County farmhouse this morning landed one man in jail on marijuana charges.
43-year old Jack Dearing was arrested after police found more than five pounds of marijuana in his home near Stewartsville.
They also confiscated drug paraphernalia and several weapons.
Sheriff Mike Brown says it appears Dearing grew and sold the pot on his five- acre farm.
Authorities may seek to have the property forfeited to the government.

Tickets for Elton John's first stop- in ROANOKE- -on his new U-S concert tour will go on sale Saturday.
The February 19th performance will have two prices: 45 and 35-dollars.
The Box office at the Civic Center opens at 10 Saturday morning.
You can also obtain tickets through Ticketmaster, Charge-by- Phone and "on-line" at w-w-w- DOT- ticketmaster- dot com.
It's a solo performance, set to start at eight o'clock that Friday night.
Coca-Cola tried unsuccessfully to get out of paying its taxes in Botetourt County.
The soda company sued Botetourt County for back taxes saying its vending machines are part of the manufacturing process and should not be taxed.
Judge George Honts disagrees.
He says the machines are used for sales, and Coke must pay personal property taxes on them.
Judges in both Clifton Forge and Rockbridge County sided with Coke last year.
Coke has also sued Roanoke, Roanoke County, Covington, Buena Vista and Allegheny County.
He was best known as the Crying Indian who became a symbol of the anti-littering campaign.
Iron Eyes Cody died today of natural causes at his Los Angeles home.
Cody was shown shedding a single tear in the 1970's TV commercial- as he watched people litter.
Cody followed his Cherokee Indian as a performer.
Cody appeared in more than 80 films.

In the ACC last night, the Duke women beat the UVa women 84-to-68.
The VMI Keydets didn't have nearly as much success last night against Southern Conference rival Davidson.

The VMI ball boy was trying out an innovative approach to sweeping the floor at Cameron Hall last night.
Davidson would do its best to mop up the floor with the Keydets as Ali Ton kicks it out to Landry Kosmalski who gets the 3. He had a team high 14.
VMI had all kinds of trouble scoring early in the game. Matt Matheny gets his shot blocked inside, but he stays with it and scores. His dad liked that work ethic, but VMI still trailed by a bushel.
Jason Bell did everything he could to get VMI back in the game. He takes on dribble and drops home the three.
Bell would lead all scorers with 36 points.
But VMI is no match for the Wildcats tonight as Davidson wins it 85-to-64.
It's VMI's first conference loss. They are now 4-and-8 overall.

Champ Bailey, the Bulldogs All-American cornerback who played both offense, defense and special teams this season has filed the proper paperwork to make himself eligible for the April draft.

One reason the Express has won seven of its last 10 is goalie Daniel Berthiaume. Today he was named the East Coast Hockey League goalie of the week.

He has been with the AHL Cincinnati Mighty Ducks. That brings the Express roster to 18 players.
