It took firefighters several hours to gain the upper hand.
Gas company officials had to close off valves for some 30 miles in both directions to lower the gas pressure so that the fire could die down.
That allowed crews to turn off the gas valves at the site of the explosion.

President Clinton's impeachment trial tops the agenda as lawmakers return to Washington this week.
Senators are expected to meet Thursday to consider a plan that calls for an early vote on whether there's enough evidence to proceed with a full impeachment trial.
Meantime, White House officials say the President is keeping his options open for his State of the Union Address which is scheduled for January 19th.
Some lawmakers, from both parties, want the speech postponed if a trial is still ongoing at that time.
