Virginia Trooper Tim Rice was on his way from the car to the plane to meet the Governor.
Gilmore's spokesman says Rice reached through the window to try to restrain the thief -- then fired off some warning shots, and two gunshots at the car as it sped away.
This afternoon, the stolen rental car led Las Vegas police on a high speed chase.
It ended in a multi-car crash.
The only fatality is believed to be the driver of the Governor's stolen car.

James Sutphin was out-numbered in a fight outside a Roanoke nightspot last June. He admitted he had a gun, but said it was fired in self-defense and that it wasn't pointed at Keith Sandifer.
The 22-year old victim died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Commonwealth Shaver and Appliance Service Company is the only store in the Roanoke area repairing the Power Wheels vehicles.
But, after the recall was announced repair kits from the manufacturer were slow in coming until now.
The repairs are relatively simple and involve replacing a few wires and connectors.
But, they can only be made by trained workers who says it's worth the wait considering the risk.
