Sixteen of these tiny fish turned up dead in the Roanoke River a year and a half ago.... just below the Roanoke Ice and Cold Storage Plant in Wasena.
Ammonia is what killed them, part of a much larger kill of 26-hundred fish in September, 1997.
Roanoke Ice used pure ammonia in its compressors. The system- -built in the 20's- -wasn't supposed to leak.
It was designed to be closed. But air got in, so they opened a valve to relieve the pressure.
The plant consummed 92-pounds of liquid ammonia a day.
Owner William Bobby Barham says the compressors are shut down now and the plant is used only for DRY storage. He entered guilty pleas today and will be sentenced in May.

There are about six thousand mobile homes in the county -- making up one third of all housing.
