A Salem man is dead and his god-daughter is in the hospital after a single-car crash tonight.

56 year old Earl Wimmer died after his minivan struck a tree off of Route 460 West in the Glenvar Heights section of Roanoke County.
Witnesses say Wimmer's vehicle was sideways in the 4-lane road before he swerved to miss a guardrail and careened off the right side of the road and head-on into a tree.
His 11-year-old god-daughter is in Lewis-Gale hospital - the extent of her injuries is unknown.
Police are still investigating what caused the crash.

Families and friends of patients at the Central Virginia Training Center say they're not happy with plans to transfer mentally retarded violent criminals there.

State officials want to move five such patients to the Madison Heights facility from Central State Hospital.
Building 14 at C-V-T-C will be renovated, and a twelve-foot fence will be put up outside it for security.
The facility would house up to 15 mentally retarded adults who committed "serious" felonies but who were not competent to stand trial.
Families of other patients say they're worried about safety.
Mental Health commissioner Richard Kellogg will meet with citizens later this month.

Firefighters in Danville have a new work schedule, and they're not happy about it.
City council voted tonight to change the work schedule in an effort to reduce costs and prevent unnecessary overtime.

Former PGA tour player Chip Sullivan is returning to Roanoke to become the head golf professional at Ashley Plantation in Daleville, a new course opening in May.

He made 11 cuts and was ranked in the top five in driving distance.
Last year, he was in Greenville, South Carolina and served as the Greenville Country Club Golf pro.
Sullivan, who currently has a Nike Card, is planning to play in three upcoming tour events, first the MCI Classic in Hilton Head, followed by the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic the next week, and finally the Entergy Classic in new Orleans.
