Investigators say 65-year-old Donald Daniel was using a charcoal grill for heat because he had no electricity in his apartment.
Some nearby items ignited, and flames quickly spread.
After more than an hour of battling the fire, crews discovered Daniel's body in the rubble.
Police officers on routine patrol were the first to notice the fire, and they helped get two other people out of the burning building safely.
