The bank said it will slash up to 10-percent of its workforce nationwide.
That's more than 7-thousand people.
Workers at Roanoke's service center got copies of a memo from corporate headquarters in Charlotte.
It said First Union will enact the job cuts by mid-March.
Today, a bank spokeswoman said she wasn't sure how many Roanoke area workers might be affected.
The bank employs almost two-thousand people in the Valley.

State police say a young child and his parents were going through the site, when the child identified a family friend, and said the man had abused him.
The suspect was arrested and charged with aggravated sexual battery. His name was not released to protect the identity of the victim.

Attorneys for convicted killer Tommy David Strickler say the jury that sent him to Death Row didn't hear all the evidence it should have during his 1990 trial.

But the eyewitness who tied him to the crime at first had trouble picking him out of a police lineup.

The Governor has appointed the "700 Club" host to the Virginia Economic Development Partnership.
The group advises Gilmore on business matters.
Robertson gave Gilmore 50-thousand dollars during his bid for Governor.
Two weeks before Gilmore's election, Robertson gave another 200-thousand dollars to the Republican National Committee's state election committee.
He gave another 15-thousand to the state GOP that year.
Gilmore appointed Robertson's son to the University of Virginia's governing board early on in his term.

The Virginia Tech Hokies now have a date with the Temple Owls after wining their Atlantic 10 tournament opener in Philadelphia yesterday afternoon.

The Fordham Rams thought they had a shot at upsetting the Hokies, but Rolan Roberts rejected those plans in the first half. The block will trigger a transition break that will eventually be finished off by a viscious tow handed jam by Dennis Mims.
The Hokies shot 50 percent for the game and got a big effort from Roberts who scored a team high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds and blocked two shots.
Brendan Dunlop and Eddie Lucas also hit in double figures for the Hokies.
