In this part of the story one element stayed the same... Saddam Hussein remained defiant.
He refused to withdraw his forces from Kuwait.
Iraqi troops had already endured more than a month of air strikes before the ground attack began.

Saddam agreed to withdraw according to the Soviet Peace Plan, but the allied forces did not think Saddam's intentions were sincere.

The allied forces, including the United States, smashed through Iraqi defense lines while on the move to Kuwait.
In this battle, they found most troops laying down their guns rather than putting up a fight.
Deserters and soldiers surrendered by the thousands.
Within 100 hours, allied forces liberated Kuwait City with no resistance.
U-S troops took over the United States embassy, and in no time ...the ambassador returned to raise the American flag.
While Saddam Hussein told Iraqi soldiers they could be proud of their brave efforts, more Iraqis were throwing their hands in the air.
Some of them were even shouting "Kill Saddam".
For the first time since August, Kuwait was free.
Four days after the start of the ground war, Iraq promised to accept all the United Nations resolutions concerning Kuwait.
President Bush called it a "quick, decisive and just victory"
Roanoke residents were happy to hear the news of the end of the war.
