A published report indicates Roanoke County has reached a settlement with Russell Metcalf.
He is the former county officer who was fired for pepper spraying a 77 year old woman.

With fresh evidence of the economy's strength, the Dow soared 125 points yesterday, closing at a record 98-97.
But it had reached 99-35 before retreating.

Although the Tokyo stock exchange opened higher, the market closed down slightly today.

A chimney fire that got out of hand, heavily damaged a home in Montgomery County.

The fire broke out just before nine last night at a home on Gardner Road in the Lafayette section of the County.
Flames quickly spread from the chimney to the walls and attic.
About half of the house was damaged.
Firefighters believe the cause was accidental.

Investigators also hope a surveillance tape will help them learn who robbed a motel two nights ago.

(( It was shortly before eight o'clock when the two entered the Comfort Inn Motel just off Interstate 81 in Fort Chiswell.
The man was carrying a shotgun and reportedly told the clerk he would NOT harm her if she agreed to hand over the cash.
Sheriff's investigators believe it's a crime the pair has committed before-- based on the fact they remained so calm and the robbery itself lasted less than two minutes.
And while the two did NOT conceal their identity-- they did wear gloves.

Another reason investigators are convinced the two aren't from this area is the close proximity of the motel to the interstate. [END SU]
Sheriff's officials say it would've been easy for someone passing through to commit the robbery and then quickly leave the area-- via Interstate 81 or 77.
As for the clerk-- she wasn't seriously injured.
But before the couple exited the motel the female suspect did spray the clerk in the eyes with pepper spray. Teresa Hamilton, NEWS 7, Wythe County. ))

State police and Smyth County investigators believe they've solved a nearly ten year old murder mystery.

They now suspect 36- year old Michael Reeves abducted, raped and murdered Betty Shumate in July of 1989.
Reeves is currently on death row in North Carolina.
At one time, Shumate's estranged husband was suspected of killing his wife.
But the charge was later dropped.

Davidson teache work and family studies classes at Blairs Middle School in Pittsylvania County.

He's written eight book about issues facing teenagers.

Dr. Strasburger said telling children to "just say no" may work with eight year olds.
But, he discouraged parents from telling their teens NOT to have sex.
Rather, he said it's more helpful to encourage them to postpone it until they're older.
He also said studies have shown that teaching teens about sex will not make them more sexually active-just better informed.

David Bowers has tied the knot... again.
There was apparently no fanfare. His closest friends and relatives didn't know.
But this afternoon, his honor, the Mayor of Roanoke, wed long-time girlfriend Marjorie McKibbin in a simple civil ceremony at the court house in Rocky Mount.
She's FROM Franklin County... a 40-year old Probation and Parole officer based in Roanoke.
It's the THIRD marriage for both of them.

Darlene Fraschilla (fruh-SHIL'-uh) an original Mouseketeer, was sentenced to two years in federal prison for conspiracy and securities fraud.
In December, Fraschilla (fruh-SHIL'-uh) was convicted on a dozen counts of conspiracy, securities fraud, mail fraud, obstruction of justice and perjury.

They blanketed the Interstate from Winchester to Bristol... THIS time without warning... part of the stepped up enforcement plan ordered by Governor Gilmore.
In the area between Christiansburg and Lexington- -they handed out more than 300 traffic tickets during an eight-hour shift yesterday.
That compares to 35 or 40 tickets on a normal day.
