The scene in which Link appears has not been released to television stations.
He is best known for his pictures of steam trains on the old Norfolk and Western Railway , which were also shot in the fifties.
"October Sky" director Joe Johnston tells News 7 he used Link's photographs as a guide for what the buildings, the signs -- even the clothing should look like in the movie.
Johnston says it was his idea to fly the photographer to the set in Tennessee for a scene with a steam engine.
The 84- year- old Link says the film crew shot five or six takes of his scene, adding that he had a great time doing it.
