It's a Japanese automotive company that's building its U-S headquarters in the Roanoke Valley.
That means two hundred jobs that pay more than 13 dollars an hour.

A fire at Waltex in Bedford has shut down production until tomorrow morning.

The fire broke out around midday, in an oven used to process rubber.
Eight to ten employees who were inside were evacuated.
Bedford firefighters and the company's own fire brigade had the smoke and flames under control within minutes.
A company spokesman says they believe the fire started when a piece of rubber overheated.
There wasn't much damage, and no one was hurt.

A 68-year-old man who accidentally shot and killed his best friend has been charged with reckless handling of a firearm.

John Kirk was looking over a revolver in the home he shared with 64-year-old Carl Hixon when the gun went off.
The bullet hit Hixon in the head and killed him.
After talking to the victim's family, deputies decided NOT to charge Kirk with manslaughter because the shooting was accidental.
Kirk will be arraigned on March 30th.

But, in a statement released today the Roanoke Valley Chapter of the Red Cross indicated the competition would decrease public participation.
The agency also suggested some blood may be sent out of the area to bolster supplies elsewhere.
But, the CEO of VBS said all blood donated in the Roanoke Valley will be used in the area.
The group is in the process of building permanent offices at Crossroads Mall in Roanoke.
They also held their first of several blood drives at the New Century Venture Center today.

A spokesman for Carilion said their hospitals will use VBS as a supplemental blood supplier but will continue to use the Red Cross as its main source of blood.
The VBS already serves hospitals in Richmond and Charlottesville.

The National D-Day Memorial won't be ready for the big dedication ceremony officials had planned for June 6th, 2000.

Site preparation is complete.
But the D-Day Memorial Foundation has a cash-flow problem.
More than eight million dollars has been raised, but some of that is in pledges... not cash.
Additional art work will be ready for unveiling THIS June. News 7 has obtained pictures of sculptures in production at the Leopold Gallery in Kansas City.
Construction on the monument itself won't begin until this summer... with the President and other world leaders on hand for a dedication ceremony POSSIBLY on Veterans day, 2000.

The Governor has 12 more days to decide what to do about a budget item that would reimburse the Finn family for legal fees.
Most of those fees were incurred by Hugh Finn's widow Michelle Finn in her fight with the Governor for the right to remove her comatose husband's feeding tubes.
Now, some Republicans point out that one advantage to the Governor changing his mind and approving the payment is that the budget language would protect him from a future lawsuit from Michelle Finn.
Mrs. Finn's attorney Greg Murphy bills himself as an expert in high profile media cases.
He represented John Wayne Bobbitt, for example.
Murphy tells NEWS 7 that Mrs. Finn will waive her rights to sue the Governor if she is repaid in full.
