This time it's just a drill.... but as the forests dry out, area firefighters are gearing up for the spring fire season.

Despite recent rains, the woods are tinder-dry tonight.
Brush fires were reported in Franklin and Mongomery Counties.
In Roanoke County tonight, firefighters were learning to work with one of their most powerful tools.

Because pilots don't like flying over the interstate carrying 100 gallons of water, hoping to avoid the chance, however slight, of an accidental drop on high speed traffic.
The drops are impressive.... 800 pounds of water, pumped up by a foaming agent, fanning out in a wide, flame choking blanket.
This is, however, not a new experiene for these firefighters, they've already seen it, in action last week, when the Green Hill forest fire almost got away from them.

Fortunately during this demonstration, the only fire around is the sunset settling on the nearby hillside... but those flames could very easily be real tomorrow, or the next day.

The Virginia Tech men's basketball team lost its head coach tonight --

Bobby Hussey was fired after just two years on the job.
In his two seasons at Virginia Tech, his teams won 23 games and lost 32.
But the losses weren't nearly as detrimental as the sagging attendance at Cassell Coliseum this season.

Prosecutors may proceed with their case against an imperial wizard of the ku klux klan accused of burning a cross in Carroll County.
Barry Black's attorneys had argued to have the case dismissed saying the charge violates their clients first amendment rights.
But Judge Duane Mink last week sided with prosecutors.
Commonwealth's attorney Greg Goad is pleased with the judge's decision saying, in his eyes, intimidation of others was never intended to be protected by the constitution.

Kevorkian is on trial for the death of Thomas Youck- who suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease.
Youck was videotaped as a doctor injected a lethal dose of poison.

Yugoslavia's president is calling for new talks on Kosovo.
Slobodn Milosevic reportedly told U-S envoy Richard Holbrooke that he's ready for serious talks to reach a just solutuion to the crisis.
Milosovic met with Holbrooke today and the two will talk again tomorrow.
Milosevic called the peace talks in France a fraud saying the U-S and European partners dictated the text of a peace deal before the start of negotiations.

Danville- based Dimon Incorporated says problems in the tobacco industry are forcing it to reduce its workforce by 25 percent.
Dimon will close one of its North Carolina processing plants and reduce staff at another. "No" Danville jobs will be affected.
But Dimon officials say the cuts reflect an overall downturn in the tobacco industry.

Haymore says reduced demand for American tobacco overseas and political pressure in the U-S are responsible for Dimon's consolidation.
Congressman Rick Boucher says the time is right to bring high tech jobs to Southwest Virginia.
Boucher met with business leaders in the New River Valley today.
He told them to go after the sort of jobs that have made Northern Virginia's economy boom.

Those jobs are in the fields of computer programming, website production and data base management.
Feeding bears on federal and state land in Virginia would be illegal if changes in the state's hunting code are approved.
There are several changes on the table.
About a hundred hunters had a chance to listen and voice their opinion at Northside High School tonight.
Several were there to protest an existing rule that bans turkey hunting through most of November, including Thanksgiving.
They say a whole generation of young hunters is missing out.

Three days after an ammonia leak was discovered at a Bedford food processing plant, experts were still working to shut down the system.
But they say the problem does NOT pose a threat to the community.
The leak was discovered Friday morning at Professional Food Systems in Bedford.
This afternoon, engineers were still working to stop the leak, but officials with the Environmental Protection Agency say no hazardous materials have been released from the plant.
One missing hiker has been identified.
The FBI used dental records to identify the body of Carole Sund.

Officials say DNA testing may be used to identify the other victim found in the trunk.
Authorities are still looking for the third victim.
Sund, her 15 year old daughter and an exchange student disappeared during a trip to Yosemite National Park five weeks ago.
A woman called 9-1-1 around two this morning in Salem to report her boyfriend and HIS friend had been shot.
When police got to the house on Kessler Mill Road, they found two men with gunshot wounds. They arrested Maurice Garrison of Roanoke nearby and charged him with malicious wounding.
Anthony Walker was critically wounded in the chest, Gregory Hankins had been shot in the shoulder.
Roanoke Memorial Hospital is not releasing the condition of either man.
Police say this was a "domestic" incident.
After two years of construction, the New River Valley Regional jail in Dublin is nearly complete.
Inmates from eight Southwest Virginia jurisdictions will be housed at the regional jail.
Superintendent Ralph Dobbins is extremely proud of the 25-million dollar jail he describes as state of the art.
Unlike most older jails, the new facility will provide inmates on site medical care and counseling.
There are also separate cells for inmates who're brought in drunk or on drugs.
It also has an isolation area for inmates that cause trouble.

A Botetourt man hopes time spent patrolling the streets will lead him to a stint as County sheriff.
A 22-year veteran of the Roanke city police force, Ron (ca-SELL) Cassell is the latest candidate to throw his hat into the ring.
Cassell is running as an independent, saying the citizens of Botetourt deserve service and protection, WITHOUT a party agenda.
This is Cassell's first venture into politics.
He will face Salem police officer Ronnie Sprinkle and Botetourt chief deputy Ken Smith in the November election.
They're popular heartburn drugs- Tagament, Pepcid A-C and others.
But a new study reports the drug could increase the chance of cancer.

The Virginia Tech women's program is in good shape. Although the Lady Hokies are watching tonight's regional finals, their appearance in the Sweet 16 has earned Coach Bonnie Henrickson some recognition.
Tennessee beat Tech Saturday and is looking for its 12th trip to the final four.

Virginia's First Family is headed west-- to the high dollar mansions of Richmond's west end that is.
The state has signed a contract with Richmond beer distributor Larry Brown to rent his 10- thousand square foot mansion.
The West Cary Street Road residence will serve as a temporary home to Governor Jim Gilmore and his family until the end of October.
That's to allow renovation to the 185-year old Virginia Executive Mansion.
