A motorist drives by a house, sees someone shot to death outside, and calls for help.
That's what happened in Galax today, but before it was over, police found a second body .. INSIDE the home.
63 year old Carol Higgins was inside. 64 year old James Higgins was discovered outside.. both dead from gunshot wounds to the head. Police say the case is being handle as a homicide.

Appomattox authorities say there's a "good chance" a gun they found in the James River this morning is the same weapon that was used to kill 35- year- old Nick Olivarri last fall.

State police divers searching the river near Madison Heights recovered a small caliber, semi- automatic handgun about forty feet from shore.

After today's trial, Cockram said he considered Ellis a "dear friend" and promised to pay back the money he borrowed.

Now, Botetourt County sheriff's deputies have arrested a 23-year-old counselor, Sarah Ann Robinson, for having sex with a 16-year-old male student.

They noticed an academy vehicle with steamy windows parked on the side of the road.
School leaders say they fired Robinson after she admitted the crime.

Federal investigators believe a plane crash that killed three area people four-and-a-half years ago was caused by a faulty rudder control valve.

132 people were aboard US Air flight 427, when it crashed not far from Pittsburgh's airport.
A report released today suggests the faulty valve was responsible for this and another deadly crash involving a Boeing 737, although there is no way to tell for sure. The crash took the lives of Richard Talbot, founding dean of the veterinary school at Virginia Tech ... Dewitt Worrell, a businessman from Lexington ... and Dave LaManca, a businessman from Roanoke County.

The Virginia Tech students who went on a hunger strike to draw attention to animal dissection have achieved their goal.

Their goal was to persuade the biology department to note in writing on course syllabuses that students with strong objections to animal dissection may apply for an alternative assignment.

Prosecutor Gino Williams believes the regional jail is a great concept but predicts it's going to cost the county more money than originally expected.

Many were under the impression the Floyd jail would simply close once the inmates were transferred.
But Williams says the Floyd jail is probably going to have to be renovated to make it handicap accessible.
The renovations are necessary because the county must have holding cells to keep inmates in while they're in court.

Virginia's Alliance for the Mentally Ill is urging Governor Jim Gilmore to sign a bill that would create a separate watchdog agency to oversee mental health.

State and federal authorities have seized 58 home video tapes from a Roanoke County man who claims he's totally disabled.
They suspect Jesse Wayne Martin of insurance fraud.
According to documents filed today in federal Court, Martin managed to convince people he's a quadriplegic. He was convicted in 1992 of incest. But he never served time, because of his supposed medical condition.
However, police have had his house under surveillance for the past several months. They say they watched Martin lugging hay bales, wielding a sledge hammer and shoveling snow.
Martin received a lump sum insurance settlement of 670-thousand dollars in 1996.
Authorities believe the home videos will show Martin roller skating , among things.

Former Baltimore Orioles manager Cal Ripken Senior is gravely ill.

The elder Ripken had a 36-year association with the Orioles as a minor-league player, scout, coach and mananger.
