One of this area's best-known chains of grocery stores is about to check out of Western Virginia.
Harris Teeter's parent company announced today it is selling all but one of its supermarkets in this part of the state to Kroger.

Kimberly, this is going to happen pretty quickly.
Harris Teeter is selling 11 grocery stores to Kroger, including both stores in Roanoke and all three in Lynchburg.
And, Kroger is selling 10 of its stores in North Carolina to Harris Teeter.
(------------)
[VO-NAT]

[pre pro]
Here's how it breaks down:
Kroger will take over all five Harris Teeters in Lynchburg and Roanoke, one each in Blacksburg, Martinsville, Lexington, Appomattox, Farmville and Waynesboro.
Danville's Harris Teeter will stay open. [page two]
At the same time, Harris Teeter will buy 10 stores from Kroger in North Carolina. [VIDEO]
[SUPER=03-Roanoke]

This is happening because Harris Teeter has not done very well in Western Virginia, but Kroger has.
At the same time, Harris Teeter has done better than Kroger in parts of North Carolina.
Both companies will move out of regions where they're not so popular, and into areas where they are.
