The experiment would go a step further with the trial of Jens Soering.
He was convicted of killing his girlfriend's parents , Derek and Nancy Haysom, in 1985.
After a lengthy international extradition battle, Soering ended up back in Bedford County. His lawyer, Rick Neaton wanted the case moved out of Bedford to escape the impact of the media. He had doubts his client would get a fair trial there.
Public interest in the case soared.
News 7 not only had regular reports during each newscast, but broadcast extended excerpts of the trial each night.
Anyone interested in the case had access to the proceedings right to the end.
