Former Roanoke Valley drug prosecutor Jeff Rudd strikes a deal with prosecutors in Roanoke County.
Rudd was accused of trying to kill his girlfriend last July, and had been indicted on attempted murder and firearms charges.
Yesterday, he pled no contest to one count of discharging a firearm in an occupied building. The other charges were dismissed.
Rudd will be on probation for three years, and must get counseling.
His lawyers say Rudd was ill at the time of the incident, but is in recovery.

Traffic along the section where interstates 77 and 81 overlap in Wythe County is expected to more than double in the coming years.
That's according to V-DOT officials who've made upgrading the stretch of road one of their top priorities.
Yesterday evening, local residents were invited to look over V-DOT's latest proposal which is drawing fire from some in the business community.

Most agree something needs to be done to alleviate traffic congestion between Wytheville and Fort Chiswell.
That's the area where Interstates 77 and 81 overlap.
Right now, 58- thousand vehicles travel the eleven mile stretch each day--- a number that's expected to more than d
ouble in 20- years.
Last summer, VDOT proposed widening the road from six to ten lanes.
But many felt the proposal was too costly and would have a detrimental impact on area businesses and property.

Two busy beavers have chewed their way through nine cherry trees and nibbled four more near Washington's Jefferson Memorial in less than a week.
The damage comes at the height of the spring cherry blossoms in the nation's capital.
National Park Service officers are preparing traps to catch -- and relocate -- the busy beavers, who have been spotted swimming in the Potomac River.

A tip helped Henry County deputies find a murder suspect last night.
35-year old Michael Ramey was arrested around nine-30.
Authorities believe Ramey killed one woman and wounded two others.
He's charged with capital murder and robbery.

A Botetourt County jury found Dorothea Martin guilty of hiring a hit man to kill her husband.
Martin is free on bond until her sentencing.
Her lawyers will appeal-- they say most of the evidence in the case is hearsay.

Most people at a last night's public meeting meeting in Wythe County agree that something needs to be done to ease overcrowding on Interstates 77 and 81.
But that's where much of the agreement ends.
Some believe widening the shared roadway is the best choice while others want the interstates seperated.
V-Dot says a firm decision won't be made for at least another three years.
