Rescue trucks couldn't get past the mud and trees, so four wheel drive all terrain vehicles created a path to the crash site.
Dispatcher Travis Harvey gave up his seat behind the radio to drive a four wheeler up and down the mountain.

supplies like chainsaws... necessary to cut a path to the wreckage, allowing emergency crews to remove the bodies before nightfall.
The pilot was David Matthews Smith, age 42 of Winchester... passengers Warren C. Moorman, age 73 of Hardy.
And two men from Frederick Maryland, 56 year old John James Gordon, and 42 year old Steve Hunt McGuigan.
Based on the wreckage at the scene, investigators say there is NO evidence of fire, and the plane did have fuel on board when it crashed.
There were high winds in the area at the time of the crash.

The pilot, David Matthews Smith, is reportedly the son of former Delegate Al Smith, of Winchester, who served about 18 years in the house of delegates.
The group was their way to Claxton, Georgia, when the plane crashed.

They won't be making as many coal cars at the Norfolk Southern shops in Roanoke.
N-S is going to slow production from 10 "hoppers" a day to six.
The company also will lay off 110-people.
This, after the company watched its coal-transporting revenues drop in the last year.
Norfolk Southern blames the drop on the global economic crisis...

Deputies would then be equipped to administer life-saving aid in times of emergency.

Most of Ayers' deputies already have at least Basic Life Support Training.
The plan has the full support of Amherst County's volunteer rescue squads.
High winds wreaked havoc on drivers this afternoon - and even some folks just sitting inside a home.
In Carroll County two tractor trailers were blown over almost simultaneously on Interstate 77 around 12-30.
State Police say wind gusts were clocked at as much as 127 miles per hour in the area.
No one was injured in either accident, but the Northbound lanes of I-77 were shut down for about 40 minutes.

The blustery breezes also caused problems for some people in a Roanoke County home.
Around noon wind knocked down an oak tree in the 24-hundred block of Loch Haven Drive.
The tree smashed into the roof of a log house under renovation, and shook up the people and pets inside.
No one was hurt.

NATO has expressed regret over an air strike it concedes may have been near a passenger train in Yugoslavia.
Serb officials say at least ten people died in the attack- and more than a dozen more were injured.
Air raid sirens are sounding again tonight in Belgrade as another night of strikes gets underway.
Still the U-S maintains it has no plans to send in ground troops.

The Congressmen both say they support our troops.
But it's Goodlatte who stresses a quick end to the crisis.
Everywhere Virginia Senator John Warner goes these days, people want to talk about Kosovo.
And the new chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee has some well-informed opinions.
Warner told a town hall meeting in Stafford County today that NATO should NOT fear Russian involvement in the Balkans.

Warner says NATO air strikes are weakening Yugoslavian resolve... and he thinks Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic will come to the negotiating table soon.
His campaign schedule and demeanor leave little doubt.
But former Governor George Allen won't say for sure until tomorrow.
Allen's scheduled a morning news conference in Charlottesville to declare if he's officially a Republican candidate for the U-S Senate in the year 2000.
Incumbent Democrat Chuck Robb is expected to run for re-election.
Valley Bank is continuing its mission to become the bank of the area.
The bank opened the doors to its latest branch today in downtown Salem.
This marks the fourth branch opening in just four years that Valley Bank has been in business.
Salem City Council members were on hand for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
Mayor Sonny Tarpley and Congressman Bob Goodlatte did the honors.
Plans are underway for a fifth branch to open in the fall of 2000.
Talk Show host Jenny Jones had her day in court.
She took the witness stand in the wrongful death suit filed by the family of a former guest on the show.
The case stems from an episode where a gay guest, Scott Amedure- revealed to the studio audience that he had a crush on Jonathan Schmitz.
Three days after the taping Schmitz allegedly shot and killed Amedure- apparently because he was embarrassed.

In tonight's Video of the Day - a construction worker in Atlanta finds himself in need of rescue - in a big way.

Renovations were under way to turn this old mill into loft apartments when fire broke out.
The worker crawled to the end of this construction crane's horizontal arm to protect himself from the blaze.
He ended up stuck on the crane for more than hour before rescue crews could reach him.
A fire fighter attached to a cable was airlifted in to rescue the man.
He strapped the construction worker to his chest - then they were lifted to a nearby grassy area where the worker walked to a stretcher and was taken to the hospital.

From humble beginnings, he rose to fame with rockabilly hits on the country music charts.
Today the man known as the world's most famous hobo died.
Boxcar Willie succumbed to leukemia.
He was once homeless but songs like "Wings of a Dove" and "6 Days on the Road" catapulted him into country music legend status.
He was 67 years old.
Lynchburg officials today unveiled their "no frills" budget for the next fiscal year.
The 101- million dollar spending plan represents about a four percent increase over last year's budget.
Most of that new spending will help provide a four percent merit pay increase for city employees.
Lynchburg is also spending 700- thousand dollars to protect itself from the "Y-2-K" bug.
The budget also holds the line on all city taxes.
The rain forecasts for later this week are raising Roanoke officials hopes that the levels in Carvins-Cove will rise.

Duke center Elton Brand is foregoing his final two years of eligibility and is headed for the NBA draft.
The associated press is reporting that Brand will make the announcement at a press conference on Wednesday.
Everybody's All-American won several player-of-the-year honors and averaged 18 points and 10 rebounds
while leading the Blue Devils to the N-C-A-A championship game.

The Kinston Indians went on the warpath in hopes of out slugging Salem on their home diamond.
Fans bundled up as the wind howled through the stands at Salem Stadium last night.
The Indians jumped out to a one nothing lead as Mike Edwards pumps this Mark Difelice pitch over the left field wall for the first run of the game.
The Avalanche comes back in the third as Gilbert Vidal (VEE-dal)doubles to right field with bases loaded. Three runs score and Salem takes the five-two advantage.
Vidal comes home later in the inning off a sacrifice fly by Adres Mitchell and the Avalance goes on to win it 9-to-4.
Chances are good that UVa defensive end Patrick Kerney will be a first round selection in this weekend's NFL Draft, possibly going in the first 15 picks.
The six foot six inch former all-american has beefed up to nearly 270 pounds.
Much of this spring he has been working out for NFL scouts in Charlottesville - impressing them with not only his strength but his speed.
The fact that Kerney may soon be an instant millionaire is almost too much for him to fathom. Remember, he came to UVa as a lacrosse player and walked on the football team.

((Grand parents and parents sit mat side, proudly watching their grandchildren and children drill various moves. As for Sonny Boyd, he's not lost, infact, the 64 year old has FOUND a home on the wrestling mat.
The 1949 William Fleming graduate lost in the state championship finals his senior year. 35 years later, in 1994, that defeat still bothered the 185 pounder.
Breaking a arm or a leg are the least of his worries the real problem is finding someone to wrestle. He trains with high school kids at the Roanoke Valley wrestling academy. Lord Botetourt's Jonas Corl has been instructed not to take it easy on his elder partner.
Boyd remodeled his garage into a training facility complete with a mat, stair stepper and a treadmill. He wrestles in one tournament a year and has placed second nationally in the masters division, proving that age is only a number.))

The Petty Pontiac is legal. After John Andretti drove the car to a fourth place finish
at Bristol yesterday, NASCAR inspectors suspected that the compression ratio on the engine's cylinders exceeded the maximum 12-to-1 ratio.
