Lynchburg police are still investigating the fatal shooting of a suspected drunk driver last night..

Eric, police say 31- year- old John Lawrence Elrod Junior was pulled over around 8:15 last night for driving as an habitual offender.. someone with multiple convictions for D-U-I.
Elrod also had two children with him.. and in their effort to prevent one tragedy, another apparently occurred.

Two officers stopped John Elrod's car on suspicion of drunken driving.. the two children traveling with him were removed safely.. police then spent ten to fifteen minutes ordering Elrod out of his vehicle.

Police say while Officer D.W. Black struggled with Elrod for possession of the gun it fired twice, one of the bullets struck Elrod in the side of the head, killing him.

Another shooting--this one in Amherst County--ended in a murder-suicide.
Authorities say 35 year old David Junior Massie of Lynchburg shot his former girlfriend, Ida Jane Douglas, then fatally shot himself.
It happened Friday night.
Investigators said the pair got into an argument after Douglas told Massie she had gone out with another man.

But Virginia Attorney General Mark Earley is trying to put an end to that by urging the federal government to take action.

But, Earley is now pushing Congress to enact similar legislation on the federal level.
As chairman of the group, "Americans for Responsible Access to Alcohol" he's already taken his case before the Senate Judiciary Committee.
