It wasn't rescue crews, but firefighters who were busy in Roanoke today. They battled a brush fire that's blamed on sparks from the brakes of a Norfolk-Southern train.

Wildfires continue to rage through the Florida everglades- already destroying 90-thousand acres of marsh grass.
The blazes have closed the stretch of I-75 that runs from coast to coast- and are now threatening several major power lines.
Florida's dry winter has lead to more than 2-thousand fires this year- this one so far is the worst.
Forecasters are predicting more dry weather and high winds for the rest of the week.

A second degree murder charge has now been leveled against the Pulaski man accused of shooting a teenage girl over the weekend.

61-year old Kenneth Whorley was arrested Saturday in connection with the death of 17-year old Terri (doo-na-gen) Duangan.
The teenager was shot inside Whorley's Pulaski home, late Friday night.
Police are still trying to determine what led to the fatal shooting.

Defense attorneys say Evans shot and killed Timothy Robinson in self- defense and then turned the gun on Lorin Murphy while Evans was still out of control with rage.

Yvon Vital Majeus (ee-VON VI-tal MAY-juss) pled guilty this morning to the October Ninth robbery of F-N-E-B.

The 22-year old Roanoke man also pled guilty to counts of using a weapon in the crime and driving a getaway car for a robbery of the same bank on November Second.
Majeus apologized to the State and the Country.
He is now HELPING the F-B-I investigate the second robbery.
Majeus may still face another charge in that case.
He currently faces up to 55-years in prison.

Petty Enterprise's hot streak continued yesterday at Martinsville when STP Pontiac driver John Andretti, who had spun out and gone a lap down 49 laps in, made up enough ground to catch and pass leader Jeff Burton with only four laps to go! The key to the win, taking on only two fresh tires during the race's final pit stop. The King hitched a ride with his driver to victory lane after the race.

Kyle lead the race at one point and went on to post a 10th place finish. The Petty cup cars followed up the first victory of the season for King Richard in the truck series. Jimmy Hensley won Saturday's Napa 250 in the Petty Dodge.
This sudden surge of Petty Power comes less than two weeks after a news conference in Level Cross to address the problems his team's have been having and to announce a renewed commitment to winning.
In the last two races since that news conference, Petty's Winston Cup drivers, John I and Kyle have produced a win, a fourth place and two top 10's. And Hensley has a win and a top five finish as well.

The bees have taken up residence
between the walls of a dorm at the University of North Carolina- Charlotte.
The buzzing makes it hard for students to study.
Today students were evacuated while exterminators worked-
