((The events in Littleton led to a series of bomb threats and hoaxes in many school divisions in western Virginia.
One of the first was at Parry McCluer in Buena Vista.
A viewer there wrote in appreciation of our coverage.
"It was done professionally with the facts reported in a manner that did not cause panic, but that was informative. Keep up the good news coverage."
Another Buena Vista resident criticized the play the Littleton story is getting.
"I understand that showing news like the Littleton incident is what the news is about, but showing this type of story just makes the so-called copycats even worse...I understand that this sort of thing happens but to show and even tell what the bombs are made of is just too much."
A viewer from Forest had a thought about how to make schools safer.
"Everyone is so quick to ban things in school why don't they just ban backpacks? It's hard to hide a propane tank bomb and pipe bomb on top of your English Lit book."
And from Vinton came this criticism:
"I believe that before the media bring in psychological experts and analysts, they should consider the role that they have played in these events. There have been events similar to those in Littleton occurring across the country in the last couple of years. The degree of severity grew with each additional attack on these schools. In each case, the media were there, reporting every detail and showing every gruesome moment...The news media, in their attempt to provide coverage, have planted ideas in the minds of our young people...News reporters at News-7 and other stations must be mindful that there is often a cost to getting the story."
