Calvin Swann's execution had been set for nine tonight until Governor Gilmore intervened just a few hours before.

(( In his short time as governor, Jim Gilmore has allowed 21 other men to make the long walk to the death chamber in Jarratt.. but in the case of 44- year- old Calvin Swann, Gilmore felt that was too high a price for Swann to pay for his crimes.
[SOT 00:03:01]

In Swann's case, those facts didn't come to light until AFTER his trial for killing and robbing a Danville man in 1992.
A team of New York attorneys dug up stacks of material that showed Swann had been diagnosed as a schizoprenic 41 times by state doctors.. as a psychotic 31 times, and 16 times was committed to a psychiatric hospital.
That record was enough to sway a governor who has built a reputation for being tough on crime and criminals.

[SUPER=03-Salem/Vinton vs Salem; :]

The two teams huddle before the game.
John Waterman passes to Josh Langford who goes stick side for the goal and a 5 to 1 Salem lead.
The defense would also get in the act as long stick Travis Hale takes it down the field and scores to add to the Salem lead.

Then Austin Humpries takes the pass and fake high and shoot low Salem led 8 to 1 and Salem wins it 14 to 6.

((nat sound)) ((Rookie Elliott Sadler and the Wood Brothers left Charlotte with the fastest test time as they turned a lap at 181 point 769 mile an hour lap.
Fellow Virginian Rick Mast wasn't quite as quick, but he left the Queen City with something better than speed - fast cash!
The Yarborough-Burdette Motorsports team for which Rick is driving this season picked up sponsorship from a Houston based industrial pipe manufacturing company for both upcoming races at Charlotte and this week's event in Richmond. ((RICK MAST/GETS THREE RACE SPONSOR:))
Hobas Pipe inc. will have to kick in over $1 million to fund these three events, but Mast knows it will take even bigber bucks from a bigger name to carry this team through the summer. ((RICK MAST:))
Speaking of funding, the big money Ford teams and drivers aren't the only ones showing off in Charlotte.
The speedway is putting the finishing touches on a brand new 16 acre camping resort located on Speedway Boulevard directly across from the track.
Among other things, the campground has two stocked lakes for fishing and 246 camp sites equipped with water, sewer, electricity and cable TV hookup.)) ((ANN ROBINSON/CAMP RESORT SALES:)) **************** ((THAT'S IT FOR SPORTS. HAVE A GREAT DAY EVERYBODY.))
