(( It was a colossal undertaking.
A 1-point-4 million dollar concrete feat of engineering on the otherwise serene James River near Richmond.
There's a mildly racy joke in the fishing community: what did the fish say when it hit its head going upriver?
Dam.
Dams built in Virginia in the 1800s made commerce more feasible-- but absolutely devastated the native fish population, which traveled every year from the ocean to the far reaches of Virginia riverways to spawn.
Now, thanks to the Bosher's Dam fish ladder, the shad are coming back... along with their skittish companions: carp, catfish, smallmouth bass, and other fish which already exist upstream.
Each of the background squares is six inches.
The shad especially would be fun fish to catch.
