It was an historic day at Virginia Military Institute today.
The first female cadets received their degrees.

Happy to have made it through the "rat line" and survived a stringent life at VMI.
But two cadets shared a special sense of pride...they were the first female cadets to graduate from the institution...
Melissa Graham...who graduated with distinction and a bachelor of arts degree in Psychology...
And Chih-Yaun Ho...who graduated with honors and a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology.
But these women not only had to endure the "rat line" but opposition from male cadets who didn't want them to be there.

Gordon Liddy...the man who spent years in jail for the Watergate scandal...was this year's commencement speaker... despite opposition from some faculty members.
Liddy's remarks about women serving in the military were blunt and to the point...he said we should go back to the way things use to be.

The lower chamber of Parliament, the DUMA, debated five impeachment motions over the past three days.
Yeltsin was accused of destroying the Soviet Union, selling out to the west, and starting the war in Chechnya, among other things.

Virginia's senators were on the same side of the debate on gun control this week.

On Friday, the Senate approved a bill that would require background checks for anyone buying a firearm at a gun show.
The measure passed by just one vote, 48 to 47.
Both Chuck Robb and John Warner voted against it.

A few minutes later, the Senate voted to table, or set aside, an amendment that would have required Internet sites selling guns to be federally licensed.
That vote was 50 to 43.
Again, both Robb and Warner voted against tabling the bill.

But, it's since become a popular site among visitors to the Jefferson National Forest.

Years later, Pandapas opened the pond the public.
He says THAT was a bad decision, considering the amount of trash people used to leave behind.
Then in 19-83, Pandapas sold the land to the Jefferson National Forest for 100- thousand dollars, with the understanding that the forest service would make improvements.
Most recently, the forest service re- located some 14 miles of trails, and is even working on a handicapped- accessible path around the pond.

The pond is stocked with bass and trout, to the delight of fishermen of all ages.
And some people just come here for a quiet nap in the sunshine...
Even though the area is well- utilized, the forest service keeps it clean thanks to help from Boy Scout troops, local bike clubs and local senior citizens.
