Performance-based funding of colleges and universities would be a first in the nation.
Today, the governor's appointees to the State Council of Higher Education in Virginia put the idea in motion.

The funding would be based on five measures:
Graduation rates and student retention rates-- that is how many first year students are back for the second year.
Exit exams... like GREs.
And Post Graduate Placement... or where students get jobs when they get out of school.
And finally, faculty productivity-- to counteract an alleged public perception that professors don't do enough work for their high salaries.
[sot 12:20:52]

((KATE GRIFFIN/STATE COUNCIL ON HIGHER ED.: WE'RE TALKING ABOUT APPLYING SOME FREE MARKET PRINCIPLES TO THE WAY WE DO BUSINESS, TO THE WAY WE FUND HIGHER EDUCATION, KEEPING IN MIND THE IMPORTANCE OF A QUALITY EDUCATION. SO IT WILL BE A TOUGH SELL IN THAT CHANGE IS ALWAYS DIFFICULT. HOWEVER, YOU CAN'T IGNORE THE EXCITING IMPLICATIONS OF IT.))
[runs=:17 ]

Virginia Tech says it's happy to have its funding tied to success measures.
But the one about where a graduate gets a job is problematic-- depending heavily on the state of the economy.
The school also sees questions still unaddressed-- like what would its base budget be?
Council members say the schools should be happy to have less political and more stable funding.
[sot 12:16:01 ]
