Not far away ... and not related, from what firefighters could tell ... a brush fire started near the Hunting Hills country club.
Firefighters had to hike through the woods to reach it.
The blaze singed just over one acre.
It was 400-yards away from the Hunting Hills golf course... And half a mile from the closest house.
It took nearly three hours to contain the fire.
Nobody was hurt, and no structures were damaged.

((After a 16 hour day at Salem, Sandy Hadaway gets her kicks by relaxing in a therapeutic martial arts class. ((:))
Taekwondo America is about the only place Sandy catches a break these days. Dealing with 31 Salem sports entails a constant barrage of coaches demands, going to as many Spartan events as possible and making tough decisions in staff meetings, But martial arts have made this 47 year old mentally strong. ((:)) ((:)) While Football coach Willis White and basketball coach Charlie Morgan and their teams received most of the glory from state championship seasons, Hadaway stays out of the limelight. But her extra curricular activities haven't gone unnoticed.))

In Feburary, workers started removing soil from under the base of the tower.
The experiment is an effort to make the monument settle better into the ground.
Experts reported Saturday that the tower has straightened about one-fifth of an inch since the experiment began.
