The 68-year allegedly shot her daughter, Georgette Smith- after she apparently heard Smith talk about putting her in a nursing home.
Smith was paralyzed - unable to eat and barely able to speak.
Smith won the right to be taken off life support and died last week.
She said she did not want her mother charged with murder.
Prosecutors said Egan's deteriorating health and her relationship to Smith made a murder charge inappropriate.

The Lady Highlanders moved a step closer to another region C championship.
Glenvar has won the regional softball title the past three years.

Galax traveled to Roanoke County yesterday and the Maroon Tide was hoping to stop the Lady Highlanders in their tracks.
Galax took the early three to two lead, but in the bottom of the second this wild pitch allowed Heather Strine to make it home and cut the Tide advantage to one.
Then in the bottom of the fourth Glenvar broke it open, Kelly Shreve at bat, the infield grounder is enough to bring home another Highlander run and it's five-three Glenvar.

Still in the fourth the Tide can't handle the hit, another Highlander crosses the plate and Glenvar wins it 14-to-three and travels to Covington for the Region C softball quarterfinals.
