The 14-year-old girl was shot in the face with a shotgun.
Her 36-year-old mother also was shot several times in the neck.

Sheriff's deputies are combing several miles of woods looking for the man they say shot both mother and daughter.
That suspect is William Edward Mize. He's 46 years old, with brown hair and hazel eyes.
Deputies say he may still be armed.
They received a call this evening that the two women were shot their front porch.
Authorities say Mize was standing on the porch of his house next door at the time...about 25 feet away.
They believe he ran into the woods and is still there.

A family of seven is now living in Lynchburg, with the help of a Catholic refugee organization and area churches.

It is, that was evident in the tired faces of the refugees... The Binaku family a mother, father and five grown children, expelled from their homeland, held in a refugee camp, then flown thousands of miles to a place called America.
Reporters had been asked not to question the weary travelers yet, but Avdi Binaku wanted to speak, and, through a translator, greet the people of Southwest Virginia.

A Vinton woman who wanted a hit man to kill her husband pleaded guilty.
36 year-old Peggy Irene Hanna hired a man who turned out to be an undercover police officer.
She was arrested on February 22nd after giving the officer a down payment.
Hanna now faces up to five years in prison for soliciting another to commit a felony.
The man Hanna was having an affair with at the time notified police of her intentions.

Gene Gaylor used to live in Covington and has been suspected of killing several people with bombs.
Today, he became the first of four to go on trial for a bombing death that happened 23 years ago.

Billy Ray Abshire was killed in 1976 when he picked up a bomb on the hood of his car.
Abshire's wife and her second husband are charged with hiring Gaylor and one other man to do the killing.

Divers spent more than 30 hours underwater, but they could NOT find the body of John Schmidt.
Witnesses say they saw him fall off his boat around midnight Friday.
Low visibility and deep, murky water have hampered the search.
Officials had called in divers from as far away as Fairfax and Chesapeake to search the lake.
While the diving is over, officials will conduct daily searches of the shoreline until the body turns up.

The school's long-standing "Terrier Stadium", which opened in 1970 was officially renamed Robert A. Patterson stadium yesterday in honor of retiring Byrd principal Bob Patterson.
Athletic director Jane Layman came up with the idea. She and others feel his 34 years of service to the school and also the Virginia High School League merits the honor.

Yet another of NASCAR's few remaining family tracks is about to be gobbled up if you believe the reports coming out of Charlotte today.

Reportedly, Bill France Jr. the head of International Speedway Corporation met with track officials at the Richmond International Raceway last month to discuss the sale of the track.
If it goes through, it would give ISC 13 of the 21 tracks used in NASCAR.
However, Wayne Sawyer the vice president of the Richmond track is denying that any talks have taken place. And that his family plans to keep the track.

But stay tuned, track owner Paul Sawyer is in his 80's and such a sale would make sense. Plus, only Indy, Richmond, Pocono and Martinsville are privately owned, and the France family owns half of Martinsville.

The ECHL franchise has hired Don Fortner as the new marketing coordinator.
He comes to Roanoke From the Dayton Bombers where he worked with Express general manager, Tommy Benizio.
The Express averaged more than 47-hundred fans this season--down three hundred from the previous year.
Fortner hopes to change that.

The Virginia Tech women's softball team dominates the state's Division one all-state team that was selected by sports information directors from around the state.

Tech head coach Scot Thomas was named the Comonwealth's coach of the year. In only his fourth season in Blacksburg, Thomas, led the Lady Hokies to a school record 54 wins a 26 game winning streak and a 25th place ranking in the national polls.
Tech third baseman Kara Krumhardt was named the state's player of the year. She batted .343 had 72 hits with seven homers and 40 RBI's.
Pitcher Clarisa Crowell was also named to the team. She posted a 25 and 8 record this season with a 1.05 ERA.
Second baseman Michelle Meadows made the team as well. She batted .338 this past season
Ashlee Dobbe was selected as an all state pitcher. She had an ERA of 0.92 and won 29 games.
