(( Popular former Governor Chuck Robb was a shoo-in for the Senate in 1988.
But popular former Governor George Allen is a formidable foe in 2000.
In a head-to-head matchup, 38-percent of voters polled late last week picked the incumbent, Chuck Robb.
48-percent picked the challenger, George Allen.
That's almost identical to where the race stood in February's polling.
There is some good news for Robb though.
His favorable name recognition is the highest it's been in eight years.
When he was elected to the Senate in November '88, he had a whopping 61-percent favorable name recognition.
As scandals emerged, it declined, to a low point of 19% in July '92.
In November 1994, when he beat Oliver North, he stood at a 33% favorable rating.
Now, he's back up to 45%.
George Allen's at a 56% favorable rating-- ironically higher than at any point during his four years as governor.
In 1993, when he was elected governor, the favorable percentage was at 50.
Mid-term it was at 43 percent.
Right after he left office in February '98, he was at an all time high of 64-percent.
Now out of the public eye more, he's dropped back to 56.
But our pollsters at Mason- Dixon say George Allen's strength against Chuck Robb makes Virginia the Republican' best opportunity to defeat an incumbent Democrat in the nation next year.
