The negotiations were often tough.
But after days of talks, the Serbs say..."the war is over." NATO says,
"it's a first step."
William Cohen, Defense Secretary:
"If the Serbs honor the agreement and they pull out on schedule, NATO
will pause and end its air campaign."
NATO says Serb forces should start pulling out of Kosovo within hours.
Clear evidence of that would suspend the bombing... then--the U-N
Security Council will vote on a resolution allowing 50 thousand NATO
peacekeepers to begin moving into the shattered province.
19-hundred of those troops will be US Marines.
Javier Solana, NATO Secretary-General:
"I am very happy today. I think today is a great day. It's a great day
for the alliance, but much more importantly, it's a great day for the
cause of justice for the people of Kosovo."
Yugoslav commanders and NATO leaders reached the agreement after a
24-hour marathon session. The talks were reportedly tedious, with Serb
commanders wanting to discuss the definition of nearly every word in the
six-page document NATO called non-negotiable.
In the end -- Yugoslavia was still trying to put a positive spin on its surrender.
Svetozan Marjanovic, Yugoslav General:
"During these negotiations we showed we are really for peace."))
