((Head pro Stewart Smith and his staff spent most of the day on Thursday marking and painting the course getting the hazzards and ground under repair for the opening round.
At just over 65-hundred yards long, Westlake is one of the shortest course in the three day event. But the ever present wind and tight fairway's will make up for the courses length.))

((The conditions were almost perfect as the first groups teed off for the morning round.
Scores during the Smith Mountain Invitational earlier this year were high and several players shot in the 80's.
The 80's were the case as several of the early groups finished. But those scores should improve throughout the round.))

The group held its first meeting in Wasena Park, back in the summer of '69.... but by the mid- 70s the monthly concerts had moved to the Roanoke Civic Center stage.
Program Director and Master of Ceremonies Hillard Jones says the group's long-running success was something of a surprise.

BUT YOU KNOW WE MOVED FROM THREE OR FOUR SMALL PLACES FINALLY WOUND UP AT THE CIVIC CENTER, AND FROM THERE WE'VE BEEN THERE ALMOST AS LONG AS THE CIVIC CENTER'S BEEN THERE.))
