Witnesses say the sound of gunshots filled their Northwest Roanoke neighborhood for an hour.

The shots came from a house yesterday afternoon in the 11-hundred block of Orange Avenue.
When police got there, they saw a man standing in the window, holding a shotgun.
37-year old Wilbur Lewis Shears apparently was shooting the gun at random.
He was charged with firing a gun in the city.
Police said nobody was hurt ... and as far as they could tell, nothing provoked the shooting.

His wife of 55 years was with him when he died.

SUPER: PRISTINA, KOSOVO/OVERNIGHT NATSOUND CHEERS TRACK UP: This was the reception Serbs gave 200 Russian troops who rolled into Kosovo's provincial capital of Pristina hours earlier .. embarassing both NATO and the Clinton Administration .. which had spent most of Friday assuring everyone the Russians would NOT move in. An assurance that turned out to mean nothing. An assurance the Administration said it got from the Russian Foreign Minister.
SUPER: FRIDAY/MADELEINE ALBRIGHT/SECRETARY OF STATE "They did not intend to deploy into Kosovo prior to an agreement about how they would fit into the rest of the force."
TRACK: After learning that the advancing Russian army was getting a hero's welcome by seeing it on TV, the White House first expressed surprise, then said the Russians had told the Administration their troops' going into Kosovo was all a mistake and that they would pull out.
SUPER: MOSCOW/FRIDAY TRACK: Deputy Secretary of State Strobe Talbott, the Adminstration's point man in Moscow, is back there this morning. His plane was turned around in mid-air when .. as the Russian troop movements began .. it became obvious that someone had their signals wrong.
KOSOVO/THIS MORNING TRACK: Several hours later .. well after the Russians .. the French and British troops entered Kosovo .. crossing the Macedonian border.

SOT BRITISH NATO PEACEKEEPER: "We were meant to be the first ones but

the way they have come in with 'K-FOR' already written on their wagons suggests that they're actually willing to join us as part of K-FOR, so, in that way, I think it seems alright."

Police in Madison, Wisconsin say a man critically wounded his ex-girlfriend and killed her fiance outside a Wal-MART yeterday where both victims worked.
The gunman then fatally wounded himself.

Then in Detroit a patient opened fire on a psychiatrist during a meeting at the doctor's office.
The doctor and another person were killed and four others were wounded, before the gunman took his own life.
According to the psychiatrist's daughter, the gunman was not an active patient of her father's but had sought help from him about a year ago.

A 12-year-old Roanoke girl found out how unfunny her joke was.
She wrote a note in class to another student promising to bomb their school.
A judge on Thursday ordered the child to perform 40 hours of community service and write a report for the judge on why her note was wrong. Her friend testified that she was frightened when she first read the note, but said she realized it was a joke after the girl explained. By that time, another student had grabbed the note and given it to a teacher.

and now three Danville men entered guilty pleas for that scheme.

Robert Hamilton, Christopher (MAY-han) Meehan, and Richard Erick Houston face two to five years in prison for stealing from Peoples National Bank.

They were caught about six months later.
Most of the money has been recovered.
